I don't think he would have made a joke. They're accusing the President of spying on this country in service to a foreign power. That's treason. Nobody would laugh at being accused of that.

Great minds, and all that. Could NOT agree more. Some things are not funny, not in a knife fight against your very life and limb.
Otherwise, ridicule is often a proven tool for driving in a stake. Trump handled the use of ridicule with perfection, during the debates, but, he was never seen actually laughing. Trump is just a deadly serious kind of guy.
The ones who scream the loudest have the most to fear. They hope by pinning treason on the President first they can keep from being charged with it themselves.
