DC woman wins thousands at MGM, and loses it all over casino typo

After a mix-up at MGM National Harbor, one jackpot winner had to leave without her cash.

Cynthia Obie won thousands on a slot machine at the Prince George’s County casino – but when the casino took down her Social Security number incorrectly, she lost it all.

Following regulations, before handing her the cash, MGM staff took her ID and personal information.

But they misread her Social Security number by one digit.

The person whose number they plugged into the database apparently owed the state of Maryland a lot of child support, and Obie’s winnings were immediately confiscated.

“I’m like no all of my daughters are grown I’ve never paid child support. I’m like this can’t be right,” she said.

By the time they realized the Social Security number error, it was too late. MGM says it’s now out of their hands, citing Maryland law.

A spokesman told FOX 5 that it’s up to Obie to follow up with the Gaming Control Agency.

Honestly I would burn the place down. If MGM management has a whiff of sense they will make this right immediately. You win at the casino... and they don’t pay? That is extremely bad for business.

If you win a big jackpot, it’s a computer error and you won’t get the money. I thought it was just the Indian casinos that pulled this stunt, but it looks like MGM has gotten on board.

In the old days, the mob at least ran an honest game.

MGM offered FOX 5 the following statement:

“We are aware of this unfortunate error and have taken the necessary steps to assist Ms. Obie in rectifying this issue. Due to MLGCA rules and Maryland State Law, we cannot provide an additional payout for this jackpot, however, if she presents the proper identification credentials to the Maryland Gaming Commission, they will provide her with the appropriate payout. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused Ms. Obie.”

Does the money automatically/ instantly get transferred to the state rather than issue the money to the winner. And you cannot correct them. State needs to reimburse the winner after details verified?

Its the casinos mistake.

They admitted it.

She will sue in court and win.

It would have been less costly to not be dicks to her, and have made sure she had her legitimate winnings.

The would not accept a gambler who put in the wrong credit card number and said, oops, out of my hands, sorry.

This reminds me of what happened to my family on Friday night... our son is moving away he decided to invite us all out (group of about 10 family and friends) to one of those all you can eat sushi places where you order food on a pad and it gets delivered a few minutes later. My son God bless him snuck out about 3/4 of the way through dinner and decided that just so there was no confusion about who was paying, he had gone to the cashier and paid the entire bill. The rest of us were still sitting at the table when all of a sudden, our pad shut down. After flagging down one of the servers, he looked at the pad and his own digital device and said “you apparently are all done.... clear out because we need the table.” We were all looking at each other dumbfounded trying to figure this out when our son slipped back into his seat. Let’s just say that it required getting the manager over to our table and some choice words were spoken before food started to arrive again.....
