A legendary Ford Mustang sold for a historic price at the Mecum Auctions event in Kissimmee, Fla., on Friday night when the bidding ended at $2,200,000.
That made it the most expensive Mustang ever sold at auction, and with good reason.
The Shelby Mustang 1967 GT500 Super Snake was a one of a kind prototype that Carroll Shelby had built for a tire test conducted by Goodyear.
He swapped out the GT500s already potent 428 cubic-inch V8 for one of the 427 cubic-inch racing V8s from Fords Le Mans-winning GT40 and updated the rest of the powertrain and suspension to match.
The result was a Mustang coupe that could hit 170 mph and averaged 142 mph over 500 miles at a high-speed track in Texas where it was running on a set of Goodyears new whitewall Thunderbolt economy tires.
The initial plan was to build 50 of the cars for sale, but at an estimated double the price of a standard GT500 there werent enough takers and the sole prototype was sold for just $5,000.

Mario said the original 289 motor didnt even go fast enough to charge the battery LOL
What made the cammer great were the massive heads and it was a great engine for unlimited type racing in all motorsports from drag racing, drag boats, NASCAR etc. It was a great response to the Chrysler 426 Hemi. But due their size, scarcity and limited specialty parts as a result they had a relatively short run as pony cars ruled the era and were unable to make them fit.
The fire extinguisher is a nice interior touch.

$5,000.00 dollars!!!
Holy crap. Talk about a ROI..
Posting before thinking. Guilty.
I started as a new engineer at $10k in 1973.
Sometimes we see these statistics adjusted for today’s dollars and don’t put the smell test to it.
I bought a Porshe 914, new, the first year they came out for $3,897. Think of it, LOL
Forty two grand median family income in ‘67 seems way high to me. I would question the source.
The $42,000 number was adjusted for inflation to a year or two ago. The actual average family income in 1967 in 1967 dollars was $7,200 according to a 1969 Social Security report I found online.
When I think of Hi Performance I always think of White Wall Tires!
Thanks, Ed
I thought the Ford 427 had hemi combustion pockets as well (?)
Actually Shelby American built one in 1967. It was called the Green Hornet.
That car was a twin supercharged 427 in a 2500lb car. Probably producing 750 plus horse power.
Yes, they did with two huge (for the time) valves. Then Chrysler went all in with four valves per cylinder, dual sparkplugs and dual distributors. Horsepower wars...those were the days! Of course the horsepower they’re getting out of today’s engines is phenominal.
I like it too and was at one time a 67 Cougar owner.
The plan is to get another one someday.
That’s what I thought, but I blindly quoted it. It has to be I. 2018dollars, not 1967 dollars. Mea culpa.
Back then food took nearly twice as much of the average family’s income as it does today.
That 427 wedge motor took the first five places at the Daytona 500 in 1963, when stock cars were actually stock cars.
