When a television show first starts, the writers of the program already have the star in mind. They write for the characters they think the audience will relate to and like the most and design the show around those characters. However, once the show hits the airwaves, the viewers don’t always agree. Sometimes the true star of the show is the unlikeliest candidate. The breakout character is usually a character who was introduced as part of the supporting cast, but for one reason or another became a fan favorite.

Arthur Fonzarelli. No doubt. Although Mork from Ork was strong enough to launch not just a character but an entire career.

You might say Trapper John from M.A. S. H. too, but he was played by different actors in the movie, the series, and the spinoff.

Bewitched “Tabitha”

The 2nd Darren (Dick Sargent) didn't help either.

David McCallum as Illya Kuryakin on the Man from UNCLE, The powers that be back then viewed the pilot episode and then sent a memo saying lose the person named K - the producers thought they meant Will Kuluva, the actor playing the boss role, and they dumped him for Leo G. Carroll as boss.

Illya became a sensation and made the show a worldwide hit for a couple years.

Archie Bunker should get an asterisk.... Norman Lear wanted Archie to be disliked, and an example of the kind of person to NOT be... and instead, Archie was beloved for being who he was.
