When a television show first starts, the writers of the program already have the star in mind. They write for the characters they think the audience will relate to and like the most and design the show around those characters. However, once the show hits the airwaves, the viewers dont always agree. Sometimes the true star of the show is the unlikeliest candidate. The breakout character is usually a character who was introduced as part of the supporting cast, but for one reason or another became a fan favorite.

Festus was probably the main reason I liked Gunsmoke.
He was plucky comic relief.
In real life, he was accomplished as a singer iirc.
I agree with: Spock, Sheldon Cooper, and Fonzie
Would also add:
— Dr. Bones McCoy
— Dr. Zachary Smith (Lost in Space)
Gomer Pyle.
And then, alas, literally jumped the shark.
> Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz) is one of many glaring omissions to that list. <
I agree completely. I don’t know how true it is, but I read somewhere that many of the other ‘NYPD Blue’ actors were jealous of Franz’s salary jump. And that’s why some of them left the show.
I was going to say the same thing. Urkel was suppose to be a one time character. Heck the show went from a sitcom to a sci-fi sitcom because of Urkel.
Reverend Jim, “Taxi”
Marsha Brady, man she was it....
Sheldon?
The story revolved around him, Leonard, and Penny.
The character changed to be sure, to make the show “work” but I am not seeing him as breakout.
IMHO
I love how he always hands his gun to the POWs when he needs to use both of his hands.
Abby Sciuto, NCIS
Dr. Rodney McKay - Stargate Atlantis.
We are re-watching “Rodney and Friends”.
General Burkhalter and Col. Klink routine was awesome too.
Actually the whole Seinfeld cast including many bit players.
Uncle Si
How about Clint Eastwood as Rowdy Yates on Rawhide.
Alex P Keaton.
Gomer Pyle got his own show.
Yes to Niles!
Niles Crane.
I’ve often thought David Hyde Pierce who plays Niles would be a hoot cast as a fussy, prissy uncle to Sheldon Cooper. Birds of a feather, apple-tree and all that.
