When a television show first starts, the writers of the program already have the star in mind. They write for the characters they think the audience will relate to and like the most and design the show around those characters. However, once the show hits the airwaves, the viewers don’t always agree. Sometimes the true star of the show is the unlikeliest candidate. The breakout character is usually a character who was introduced as part of the supporting cast, but for one reason or another became a fan favorite.

Actually, I found the clip. It’s actually pretty interesting and funny. The billing issues comes up about 4:15.

If you’re talking M*A*S*H, then my favorite was Colonel Flagg.

Also Dr. Sidney Freemen.

Ken Curtis was the son in law to John Ford. Was also pallbearer to Ward Bond along with John Wayne, John Ford, Terry Wilson (Bill Hawks), and Frank McGrarf (Charlie Wooster). Bond willed to John Wayne the shotgun Wayne used when he accidently shot Bond in the butt.

Yes it’s MASH.

I also liked the episodes with Col. Flagg and Sidney Freeman in them!

Breakout Characters in TV History

I thought a "breakout" character was a character who ended up with their own show.

I believe you’re thinking of a “spin-off” character.

My joke zoomed right over your head.

No one cares what anyone born before 1940 thinks about anything these days. Most of them are starting to see their attention span wane a tad bit.

She is not her character on the Office. She is as weird as the rest of them. But her characters are cute. Thank the writers.

The titles have “meaning” in Hollywood. Different titles, different union rates. And moving into the syndication world, those titles drive residuals.

For example, “also starring”, or “with” get you a different rate. Over time it’s a big financial deal.
