Bohemian Rhapsody surprised Hollywood by winning the top drama prize at the Golden Globes on Sunday night, but the films big honor quickly turned awkward and controversial.
After cast and producers took the stage to accept the award for Best Motion Picture Drama, producer Graham King notably didnt mention the films director, Bryan Singer. Neither did star Rami Malek when he took home Best Actor in a Drama for his portrayal of Freddie Mercury.
*SNIP*
Singer was reportedly fired from Bohemian Rhapsody roughly two weeks before filming was completed amid reports of on-set turmoil yet retained his directing credit.
Moreover, for years Singer has been repeatedly accused of sexual misconduct; in December 2017, he was sued by a man claiming the director raped him when he was 17 years old. (Singer has dismissed such reports as false accusations and bogus lawsuits.)
Within moments of the films win, people on Twitter were quick to notice both the lack of mention of Singer on stage and the fact his film was honored so heavily on a night when many celebrities vocally and visibly supported the Times Up and #MeToo movement (see some examples of the online reaction below).
Adding to the online debate was the film itself. Bohemian Rhapsody received mixed reviews from critics (even though Maleks performance was widely praised), yet beat out Black Panther, BlacKkKlansman, If Beale Street Could Talk and odds-on favorite A Star Is Born for the win.

I can’t abide that Sasha Cohen person
The guy on Halloween with the hockey mask
Well, he was there!
He played the record producer who turned them down, and was also dressed as an ‘old’ Wayne from ‘Wayne’s World’ who caught Freddie’s eye.
The only reason Lady Gaga didn’t win is becuase she is woman, women really struggle and she has it tough. /s
I remember that (Yes, I am old).
It was disgusting — and terrifying for a young child.
Oh lord.
She might like this DVD (I have it and it is interesting):

Very cool! Thanks for the recommendation.
If it’s of any consolation, the film didn’t depict homosexuality as being good at all (actually, if anything, it depicted Freddy Mercury’s adoption of the lifestyle as the start of his problems, including alienating his friends and loved ones, adopting various negative personality traits, ruining his relationship with his girlfriend, etc., etc., and that’s not even getting into how it ultimately killed him via AIDs. In fact, the only other major gay character in the film, Paul Prenter, was the closest the film had to the main villain, considering he used Freddy for his own gratification, basically was a weasel who sold out his friends for the mistakes he made, and was the person second-most responsible for Freddy’s downfall, with Freddy himself obviously being the most responsible for that.). Granted, Ravi Malek implied that this was more due to time constraints rather than intentional, but hey, even accidents lead to much better results sometimes, and this is one of those even better accidents if you ask me. If anything, God WOULD approve of this movie precisely BECAUSE it effectively condemned homosexuality and depicted it as not being good at all.
“Im with that other poster. Im not into faggotry at all. I read about that Beale Street movie on IMDB. Saw the word racism. Not interested in that movie now. Yes, racism exists today and is shameful, but I dont need another Hollywood treatment of it.”
As I and another user pointed out, the film at least painted homosexuality in a very bad light in addition to keeping it to a minimum. For example, the film makes it very clear that Freddy Mercury’s adherence to homosexuality was what started his downfall, and ruined several of his relationships and made him really unlikeable by the midpoint, and that’s not even getting into his getting AIDs because of it and dying. Not to mention, the only other gay character in the film, Paul Prenter, was depicted in such a negative light that he was the closest the film had to a villain, since he was pretty much largely responsible for Freddy Mercury’s downfall, up to and including the breakup of Queen, basically used Freddy for his own gratification (including hiding information from him about Mary Austin’s contacting him and especially the Live Aid concert plans) and blaming others for his mistakes (in fact, if you colored him black, you’ve pretty much got Barack Obama regarding Paul Prenter). Of course, then again, Ravi Malek implied that was an accident due to time constraints, but, sometimes accidents produce the best results.
At least it’s not like Supergirl or Roswell, New Mexico on the CW where they treated gay as a good thing, or for that matter When We Rise on ABC, which clearly painted gays in a positive/sympathetic light.
It's about time Bohemians finally stopped taking this stuff!
And accurate.
Baron Cohen would have worked every wild rumor into the movie and made the movie more about himself than the character he was playing.
Just my opinion, but the last thing the world needs is another Sacha Baron Cohen film.
Like I said after the Golden Globe wins. Rami Malek will win an oscar for best actor in a leading role.
Bohemian Rhapsody will not win an oscar for best picture because of the allegations against Singer.
And accurate.
Dis him or not he will win an Oscar for best actor in a leading role.
