Last nights 76th Golden Globe Awards saw big surprises like Bohemian Rhapsodys big win for Best Motion Picture, Drama, a big send off for FXs The Americans, flu shots, a trio of victories for Green Book, some history made by co-host Sandra Oh and a Saturday Night Live alum mock marriage proposal.
Clocking in at around three hours and twenty minutes and coming right after a NFL Wild Card playoff game that threatened to run long, the Killing Eve star and Andy Samberg fronted ceremony was a little bit more traditional than usual and never even mentioned Donald Trump once. Kicking off the awards season, the omission of the often Hollywood reviled former Celebrity Apprentice host was despite pointed political remarks by Vice star Christian Bale, Roma director Alfonso Cuaron and The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story executive producer Brad Simpson.
Following the six-year ratings low of last years Seth Meyers hosted Globes, NBC were looking for a win in the numbers. However, on a Sunday of little primetime competition on broadcast or cable and the big lead-in of that Philadelphia Eagles close win over the Chicago Bears, it looks like the Comcast-owned net were denied.
The 76th Golden Globes snared a 12.7/21in metered market results.
Thats down 5% from the early metrics of 75th annual Golden Globes of January 7, 2018, which were basically even with the 2017 Jimmy Fallon hosted ceremony. Tracking across the years, last nights Globes were the lowest in metered markets since the 2015 ceremony when Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were co-hosts for their third and final stint.
In the final ratings, the 2018 Globes hoisted a 5.0 rating among adults 18-49 and 19.0 million viewers, a double digit demo decline from 2017 and the worst the Hollywood Foreign Press Association event had done since 2012.
Though a dip from last year, one thing that perhaps makes the 2019 ratings result a bit easier to digest for the Globes and the night winning NBC is that they come in an environment that has seen NFL ratings inch back up and the Emmys and the Oscars crumble to all time lows over the last year. Whether that ends up being the case here is still TBD, though right now, with 55 markets reporting, the Globes and that well watched NFL game are looking to be handing NBC the best metered market result of any Sunday since the Oscars back in March.
Well update will more Globes ratings as they become available as well as how the likes of Shark Tank, Family Guy and NCIS did last night too.
I don’t watch hollywood shows. What is the purpose of hollywood? Entertainment? Enlightenment? It would be interesting to see them write their own ‘mission’ statement.
I wonder why? /s
A lot of people likely ... did not even know it was on.
Happy to read the ratings are down. I doubt if any of the award shows will ever recover from their shift to HATE ANYONE OR ANYTHING that does not believe what they believe.
What is the purpose of hollywood? Entertainment? Enlightenment?
Diversity which equals Garbage Product
How many times a year do these people give themselves awards????
Nice take.
Well, it didn’t help a lot of the nominees were not recognizable to viewers.
Feels like there is an award show every week.
Doesn’t it though????
Their self-aggrandizing is really ridiculous...
I didn’t watch the awards, but I see “The Americans” won best TV drama. Great! I loved that show and was sad to seen it end.
Wow! No kidding and I thought everybody watched them
/s/
I watched the first few minutes, with my finger on the remote, ready to leave when they started bashing Trump. It didn’t happen. But I am glad I stopped there and missed the buffoons who ruined it later in the program. I knew it would happen.
i didn’t even know it was on ...
“The Americans” award was well deserved—but it may be a case of a broken clock getting the time correct twice a day.
The Russia hate meme fit into the politically correct template (for now)....the left used to love Mother Russia—Uncle Joe was one of their favs...
I didn’t even know they were on. Wouldn’t have watched even if they did, for that reason plus award shows just bore me to tears. I caught up on “Gotham” instead.
Trump-bashing and Satan worship. Who in their right mind would tune in for that?
They’ve lost this viewer back in the 70s.
Shocked!
