Whether assimilation is by fictional aliens in the television series Star Trek or in real life against Indigenous people, the meaning is the same and should never have been approved for a personalized licence plate, a senior executive with Manitoba Public Insurance says in internal email.
The unusual government discussion of alien species came during panicked discussions by senior staff at the non-profit Crown corporation that approves and issues the provinces licence plates after social media buzz about a Star Trek fans personalized plate ASIMIL8.
The government immediately cancelled the plate in 2017, after two years of it decorating Nicholas Trollers truck. For Troller, the phrase is associated with the Borg, a partially cybernetic group of protagonists in the science-fiction series. The Borg grow by assimilating new species into its collective.
His plate was surrounded by slogans reflecting the Borgs other catchphrases: We are the Borg and Resistance is futile.
Troller filed a court challenge in 2017, supported by the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms, a conservative non-profit organization that defends constitutional freedoms through litigation.
As part of the court process, government emails from staff at Manitoba Public Insurance (MPI) were recently filed in court.
The communications show the plate was cancelled not after a formal complaint but when a social media post was spotted by a government employee. Further, the plate should never have been issued in the first place, Ward Keith, vice-president of communications with MPI, said in emails.
Are there other plates out there that we need to be concerned about? We need a complete listing for review, Keith wrote in an email April 24, the day he learned of the plate.

"The truth must not be told."
Assimilation has always been the strength of the US, people came here to be Americans. Now it’s a dirty word because it makes America stronger. They want to destroy America with hordes of diverse groups. A built in division that makes control easier.
Canada, too, eh?
So would coexist also be offensive? The difference is only in perspective.
It sounds better than:
EX-TER-MIN-ATE!
EX-TER-MIN-ATE!
government’s jobs now are to protect people’s delicate feelings?
Even aliens must ASIMIL8.
Everything is political in the modern world. Nothing is just what it is.
The left wants newcomers to remain in a separate and unhappy group. They do not want assimilation. They want them to be in a permanently angry victim group. What if the specially-privileged groups melted into the general population? They could no longer be told to blame their lack of integration on the majority, and the politicians would lose votes.
What if the plate said “allahu akhbar”? It would be approved at once.
Unreal
I’m waiting for a letter from the CA DMV to show up telling me to turn in my “TRUMP 45” Vanity Plates, just because...
There needs to be a reset button for the wimpy human race.
1. Deny a country's people the use of their natural resources to economically strangle the country.
2. Bring people from resource-deprived and climate-hostile countries to countries with favorable climates and abundant resources.
3. Demand that the immigrants keep their old-country ways within the new country.
4. Deny the host country their privileges of citizenship and cultural history, and encourage the immigrants to expand their home culture into the host country.
5. Run for government offices in the new country on a platform of protecting the cultural heritage of the country they left behind.
6. Transplant the entire population of the third-world country into the host country, and then exploit the resources that the host country was shamed into not using.
