Ford is recalling more than 953,000 vehicles worldwide to replace Takata passenger air bag inflators that can explode and hurl shrapnel.
The move includes 782,000 vehicles in the U.S. and is part of the largest series of recalls in U.S. history.
Included are the 2010 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX, the 2010 and 2011 Ford Ranger, the 2010 to 2012 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, the 2010 and 2011 Mercury Milan, and the 2010 to 2014 Ford Mustang.

GM had their problems as well. From Wikipedia:
In May 2014, General Motors expanded their earlier recall of their 2012 Chevrolet Cruze sedan and other models because of an electrical problem with the Takata airbags. The recall also included the Buick Verano, the Chevrolet Sonic and the Chevrolet Camaro.[36]On June 25, 2014, General Motors told their North American dealers to stop selling their 2013 and 2014 model Chevrolet Cruze sedans. GM stated, "Certain vehicles may be equipped with a suspect driver's air bag inflator module that may have been assembled with an incorrect part." The airbags involved were made by Takata Corporation.[36] On June 11, 2014, Toyota recalled 2.3 million vehicles, many for the second time.[12]
I have a 2010 Ford Fusion (came with the new wife, I would have never bought it.) Ford sent me a letter telling me to quit driving it, and until they got a new airbag in they would pay for a rental car. I got the letter in July, and they paid for the rental until they got the airbag in November.
The funny part, Ford rented me a Chevy Silverado extended cab for several months. By the time Ford caught on and demanded the car rented be an actual Ford product they were able to fix my Fusion.
Call the service desk and tell them you got a letter about a rental car from Ford.
Old news. I had a 2004 Ranger that had this recall done last year.
Ah, I did not know that. I just haven’t received any airbag related recalls for my G8 or Solstice. Silly me.
Talking the ‘06 Mustang GT in next week for both front airbag replacements.
“I have a 2010 Ford Fusion (came with the new wife, I would have never bought it.)”
You got a new wife when you bought the Fusion?
All they offered me was Zero Percent Financing for 72 months.
In 2009, the Soccer Mom Law went in effect: All vehicles 10k lb and under had to have stability control.
It was due to a soccer mom rolling her SUV and suing.
Check out the work after.
We got the airbags replaced and i noticed many gouge marks on the plastic dash panel.
This Takata crap has been going on for the past 4-5yrs. Isn’t there another airbag maker other than the Takata murderers?
+2.
>>>I have a 2010 Ford Fusion (came with the new wife, I would have never bought it.)<<<
The Wife or the Fusion?
something I never thought about do they get unstable after X years (either to go off prematurely or not at all??)
required maintenance to replace them after 10 (?) years and how much does that cost $$$ (not a recall just REQUIRED maintenance somewhere in the fine print ???)
one of those GOTCHAS like replacing those very expensive batteries on electric cars (that the proponents never seem to mention - or the additional carbon footprint that it entails)
Ford, and other makers, are short on replacement airbags. I had to wait about 7 weeks, Ford provided a rental car. I wasn’t supposed to be driving my vehicle with my wife in the passengers seat, and we almost always take my SUV, so we took advantage of the Chevy Equinox rental. I thought it was a pretty good vehicle, although I like my Edge better.
Thanks for the warning. I was wondering if the job would be a “clean” one.
Thicken the metal. I bet they used the thinnest cheapest quality metal. It obviously did not contain the explosion.
Never would have bought the Fusion. The wife has working airbags. :)
>>>The wife has working airbags. :)<<<
I assume they “are real and they’re spectacular”.
Seinfeld reference...
I have one of the recalls. It was interesting that the ‘inflators’ as they call them, or DETONATORS, as I call them wasn’t much of a problem until they had replacements necessary.
Obviously I wasn’t willing to wait that long and so those detonators have long since been removed from my vehicles.
