Of those ten, the only two I haven’t seen are The General and Playtime. The only one of those I would consider worthy of the top 10 is Some Like it Hot.
I would include Caddyshack, Animal House and others that don’t immediately come to mind.
I've seen it perhaps 3 or 4 times, and it left me, at best, mildly amused.
Meanwhile, for me, when it comes to gut-busting laughter, the National Lampoon and Mel Brooks comedies are in a class by themselves.
I guess comedy, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.
In fact, the main theme is so profound that it might not even be considered a true comedy, but a serious drama with humor.
Comedy is a very subjective genre. Also a lot of it doesnt translate very well into other languages and cultures. For that reason the silents had a broader and more universal appeal at their time than once sound came into existence. IMHO I would put The General at #1 or toss in the body of Keatons work during the 1920s. Chaplin a close second. After that one can debate the talkie era and beyond.
