Alice Cooper: 'I want my shows to take you as far away as possible from politics'
Guardian UK ^ | Saturday, December 29, 2018 | Interviewed by James McMahon

I don’t like to mix politics and rock’n’roll. I don’t look at Bono, Sting and Bruce Springsteen as political. I look at them as being humanitarian. I’ll contribute to anything humanitarian. Helping people who can’t help themselves. But when musicians are telling people who to vote for, I think that’s an abuse of power. You’re telling your fans not to think for themselves, just to think like you. Rock’n’roll is about freedom – and that’s not freedom. I want my shows to take you as far away as possible from politics. It’s supposed to be an escape from the world we’re living in. And you know the next president is going to be worse than Trump, right?

I remember riding my bike past the Birmingham Palladium and seeing the show bill for Alice Cooper in 1970. I believe admission was $3. I was only 15 and there was no way my dad was going to let me go to the show. Had to save up the money for his albums.

Detroit used to be one hell of a party town back in the day, do you remember the Olde Shalayle in Greektown?

We used to go there on Sunday nights and it was 10.00 a head to party upstairs for the night (first come first serve) that included all the beer and mix drinks you could consume, it was a crazy place...…..the stories I could tell leaving that place....

“I want my shows to take you as far away as possible from politics.”

Yeah, right Alice...

Then why’d you write “Elected”..uh, uh?

Or PDJT’s theme song...”No More Mr Nice Guy”?

We played our Billion Dollar Babies albums to death a couple times at least.

Did not A.Cooper live in Arizona, have a restaurant/bar in downtown Phoenix at one time, at least 18 years ago?

Vincent F (Alice) is the most under-rated song writer of all time.

A brilliant musician, and a stand-up man by all reports.

How would song be transphobic?

I know people don’t need a reason to bash a song now, but I always thought is was considered pretty straight forward first person account of domestic abuse without the usual Cooper flourishes.

Tina Turner covering probably provides a little cover too, I would imagine.

Anyway, sorry to talk your hear off. Really a lovely little song and one of my juke box favourites. Always promotes interesting discussion.

do you remember the Olde Shalayle in Greektown?

Yep, after all these years, it's still there and nothing has changed.

"The musician, 70, on avoiding politics, cheating at golf and having understanding parents."

Yeah, it would take someone of that generation to believe that people should think for themselves and that entertainers should not preach politics to their fans. Today's American youth increasingly appear to be the heirs of Mao's Red Guards in the Cultural Revolution - mindless leftist zombies who punish non-conformity instead of celebrating it.

And his band had probably the best double-axe attack in the biz back when it was very much in vogue to have twin leads.

I think it was antipolitical. Total satire.

. “Every night when we do Elected in the show, and I get to the punchline at the end of the song – when I talk about all the problems in the world and I say, ‘Personally, I don’t care’ – everybody cheers.”

Springsteen campaigned for Hillary. Bono campaigned to legalize abortion in Ireland. So, both are guilty of what Cooper condemns.

It’s not transphobic. Just a shot at the MENstrual movement, what with everyone being hyper-PC in an attempt to offend no one, ever, or else.

Oddly, I’ve never been FB jailed. I post a lot of illegal immigrant crime stuff. Sometimes I think I’m being shadow-banned, but can’t prove it, and don’t really care. Thinking about dropping it entirely. Maybe go out on an epic anti- trans illegal immigrant rant.

I can respect Alice Cooper for that stance. I like his music too.

Madonna, Lady GaGa, Bruce Springstein, Bono, Sting, and so on,,, not so much.
