But after having read a bunch of stories like this I have to wonder, "why do these people have social media accounts?"

I wouldn't if I was rich and famous. Too easy to make a nitwit of yourself in front of the entire world.

I have to wonder, "Why do these people have social media accounts?"

Ego? It's not enough to be rich and famous. They want to believe they're Great and Good and Wise, as well, and they want to share their great good wisdom with all the world. The idea that they might be nitwits, or even seem so, doesn't cross their minds.
