If you are looking for an entertaining film to watch over the next week as you relax in this holiday season, I would highly recommend "Gagarin: First In Space." It can be found on Netflix and is a Russian movie with subtitles. It chronicles how Yuri Gagarin was chosen to be the first in space along with great SFX of the flight itself.
What is interesting is it doesn't sugarcoat the story. For example, Gagarin's backup cosmonaut, German Titov, was genuinely pissed off that he wasn't chosen to be first and doesn't hide his disappointment.
Also fascinating is the portrayal of the Chief Designer, Sergey Korolev. In the "Right Stuff" he was portrayed as some sort of monstrous ogre but the real life Korolev served a brutal sentence of six years in the slave labor camps during the Stalin era. An interesting scene in the movie in which he expressed disgust with the relatively primitive state of Soviet technology. It was only due to his abilities and drive that their space program ever got off the ground. BTW, so important was he to the Soviet space program that after he died in 1966, that program pretty much fell apart.
Here is a TRAILER with some of the highlights.
Not at all. He came off as a very gregarious sort liked by his colleagues. Great sense of humor. I checked and that categorization of Gagarin at that time was correct. An interview with him by the BBC confirmed that. Unlike many moody Soviets at that time, Gagarin smiled quite a bit. The moody one was actually Titov who was supremely pissed off that he was passed over for the chance to go first.
Later I found out that Russians use "g" for "h," so the guy was really "Herman." Bad enough, I guess.
Plus, "German" in Russian is a different word - one related to the word for mute, dumb, unable to speak.
Like in Spanish it is “Aleman.” Greeks also don’t call themselves Greeks. Oh, and Germans don’t call themselves German. Not even close.
So, where exactly does your firmament line occur? Would Mars or Venus be inside or outside? The rest of the planets? The sun?
I wish that I knew for certain, but I can only guess. NASA says we cannot get past the Van Allen radiation belts (3600 miles above earth), so the height of the firmament appears to be at or less than 3600 miles.
Here is the link where NASA admits to this 3600 mile high barrier: https://youtu.be/4O5dPsu66Kw?t=164
The Bible does not refer to Mars or Venus or the like as “planets.” It refers to a greater light (the Sun), a lesser light (the Moon), and the stars. No mention of planets. Genesis 1:16
When the Bible refers to the stars, it places them in the “sky” or “firmament” depending on how the underlying word is translated from Hebrew to English. Genesis 22:17
However, the Sun and the Moon appear to traverse courses that are entirely under the firmament.
"And, it's been done before! That's how we got a man on the moon."
The above statements suppose that NASA is telling the truth. I do not make such suppositions.
"And if planets aren't mentioned in the Bible, then how do we fit them in to this limited-firmament idea?"
The above statements suppose that "planets" are huge and/or far away. I do not make such suppositions.
You are supposing sizes and distances and treating your suppositions as fact. I am choosing to examine the evidence before drawing conclusions.
German Titov should not be late with his Communist Party Dues that one time...
Or was it burping during one of Khrushchev’s speeches ???
Svartalfiar,
“Planets” do not exist. There are “stars” and there are “wandering stars.” God did not make any “planets.” Read Genesis 1, Genesis 7:11, and Jude.
“Stars” are IN the firmament (aka “sky”), just as the Bible says. Use an online Bible to search for the words “star” or “stars” in Genesis.
The moon is under the firmament. We can see stars through it.
Your statement, “Distances can be fairly accurately measured ...” is not correct. We can make all the calculations we want based on whatever theory we hold, but we are not capable of “measuring” astronomical distances at all. The distances we “measure” using calculations are based on an unproven theory. It is not valid to presuppose that an unproven theory is “true” and then make calculations based on such a supposition to “prove” that the theory is true. This is known as “circular reasoning.”
Your statement, “Can we travel to the other planets? if they’re within 3600 miles, wouldn’t it be easy to go visit and see if they’re actually there?” makes unfounded suppositions.
First, you have assumed that there are “other planets.” There are no “other planets.” There are stars. Read Genesis.
Second, you have assumed that we are on a “planet.” We are not. We are on Earth. Earth is not a “planet.” Earth is a realm on a plane. It does not move. Water on its surface (oceans, lakes, etc.) does not curve. It may move (waves, tides, rivers, etc.), but it does not curve. Undisturbed, it is level everywhere you observe it.
Third, you have assumed that we can travel through a vacuum using rocket engines. We cannot.
Two forces are involved in rocket motion:
1) The push against air during the ascent phase. This is a very strong force, but requires a medium (air) to make it possible. It only lasts until you reach a vacuum or near vacuum several dozens of miles up.
2) Newton’s Third Law of Motion. This is a relatively weak force associated with throwing chemical propellants behind the rocket at high velocity. It is not sufficient for sustained ascent through a vacuum or near vacuum. That vacuum or near vacuum begins at roughly 60 miles up. You still have thousands (possibly) of miles to go.
Your questions are insightful: “Since the firmament is the farthest away from Earth we can go, What happens when we get there? Is it just a wall of stopping you from going farther?”
In my opinion, we cannot pass through the firmament without God’s permission. As far as I know, we do not have such permission. The Bible describes the firmament (sky) as a physical wall of molten glass. Job 37:18
NASA and all of the other “space” agencies are lying to you.
Blessings to you and your loved ones.
