Holiday Film Recommendation: "Gagarin: First In Space"

If you are looking for an entertaining film to watch over the next week as you relax in this holiday season, I would highly recommend "Gagarin: First In Space." It can be found on Netflix and is a Russian movie with subtitles. It chronicles how Yuri Gagarin was chosen to be the first in space along with great SFX of the flight itself.

What is interesting is it doesn't sugarcoat the story. For example, Gagarin's backup cosmonaut, German Titov, was genuinely pissed off that he wasn't chosen to be first and doesn't hide his disappointment.

Also fascinating is the portrayal of the Chief Designer, Sergey Korolev. In the "Right Stuff" he was portrayed as some sort of monstrous ogre but the real life Korolev served a brutal sentence of six years in the slave labor camps during the Stalin era. An interesting scene in the movie in which he expressed disgust with the relatively primitive state of Soviet technology. It was only due to his abilities and drive that their space program ever got off the ground. BTW, so important was he to the Soviet space program that after he died in 1966, that program pretty much fell apart.

Here is a TRAILER with some of the highlights.

Perhaps one day there will be a movie solely about Korolev. It was amazing what he was able to accomplish against all odds.

...

Russia still uses technology copied from the German V2.

I don’t think Gagarin was the first in space.

I read somewhere that the Russians had several who did not survive re-entry before Gagarin finally made it.

I saw a post soviet documentary several years ago about soviet rocketry in the 50’s, leading up to the first manned flight.

One memory I have is of a launch pad fire where the techs were so terrified of failure (a free trip to Siberia or execution) they ran into the burning structure to remove valuable items from the inferno. Several self-immolated.

There is a great article about one who did not make it.

“Cosmonaut Crashed Into Earth ‘Crying In Rage’” was the title. NPR online I think.

Okay, great. Check out the scene where Chief Designer stated that he hoped Gagarin’s capsule would not land in another country for fear that the rest of the world would see how primitive it was.

“Gagarin: First In Space.”

But, but in 1968, Science and Mechanics magazine had a series of articles showing how the Gagarin space shot was “faked”!

There is a problem with this story.

There is a firmament that makes all going to “space” stories impossible.

See Genesis, Chapter 1.

Read Genesis, Chapter 1 and Genesis 7:11.

Go to prayer. Ask your heavenly Father if He is speaking the truth.

Pay attention to what He tells you.

Then decide for yourself if you believe what He says.

“Holiday Film Recommendation: “Gagarin: First In Space””

I guess they won’t bother honoring the three cosmonauts that attempted, but failed, before Gargarin.

The Hebrew word for "firmament" means "a wide expanse."

Sometimes discernment involves looking stuff up.

Take the matter up with your heavenly Father.

“a wide expanse” does not have floodgates. Genesis 7:11.

Sometimes understanding involves looking stuff up.

I’ll check it out.

Contrary to many who didn’t give “First Man” a chance because it didn’t focus on the planting of the American Flag on the moon, I didn’t see it as critical to the film...It highlights that the Space Race was an American project beginning to end...It’s just that the story was focused on Neil Armstrong as a biography.

I even appreciated that they minimized external shots of spacecraft to focus on the astronaut perspective during launches and landings. I also thought Ryan Gosling captured Armstrong’s almost casual stoicism well.

If Gagarin was made with the same effort at biographical detail and is similarly light on propaganda, I’m sure I’ll enjoy it.

The trailer was better then most American films. The camera work and special were great.

If the movie doesn't make him out to be a brooding, moody, near-psychotic jerk like First Man did to Armstrong, it's worth a watch.
