There are essential and non-essential federal employees. During a shutdown the non-essential do not report to work while the essential MUST or risk termination. Neither group receives pay while the shutdown is in effect. When it's all settled and everyone gets their back pay, the non-essential group received paid days off while the ones that were required to report for duty got shafted.
Exactly what is a non-essential employee? What are their job titles? Are they F/T or P/T?

Actually, no. The cook has to cook. Restaurants don’t hire more people than they need to stay in business while serving the customers. If only the government operated the same way.

EVERY report I have ever read about what follows a shutdown & full operations has stated that those who were NOT at their desks got their back pay-—for NOT working.
When was the last time a non essential federal employee was laid off?

IN SOME very small rural eat places, that is EXACTLY what happens.

you know perfectly well that there are plenty of people riding in the wagon & those who are pulling the wagon aren’t impressed.
I’ve known fed employees that routinely took off from Thanksgiving to the end of the year. Seems like plenty of vacation pay out there to use. Much more than non-government folks get.
Calculate your cost of benefits to see how much you REALLY are making. Compare that to the average for the rest of the US.
Example: Shutdown continues until February. The essential group had to report for duty but the non-essential did not. Neither group is receiving a paycheck during this time frame. Pay is not received until the shutdown is settled and congress agrees to give back pay (which is no guarantee). Historically, everyone gets paid.
Not disrespectful or unfeeling. I have left many a job over policy. It is what people do to better themselves.
Best to avoid confusing ‘This country needs federal employees’ with ‘This country needs me!’
Please tell us what we owe you for being such an abused payroll patriot who receives a days pay for a days work.
I not only support the President 100%, I recommend he tell the members of Congress that he will not sign any bill that pays laid off workers for not working. Private sector workers do not receive pay when they are laid off so it would be IMMORAL (thank you, Nancy Pelosi) to pay people for not working.

And why are any “nonessentials” even employed?
Yes. That’s why several government shutdowns have failed to accomplish the purposes dramatically stated by political performers.
This should read: the non-essential group received paid days off money for NOT WORKING while the ones that were required to report for duty got shafted their duly earned paycheck.
Those who worked during the shutdown had paychecks delayed should receive some interest on the money withheld from them. But shafted, no. They received just compensation for contracted work.

That is how fedgov defines essential, though. Essential does not mean redundant.
Essential means that the position is necessary to keep the infrastructure necessary and to prevent possible damage to property or lives.
I'm DOD though, and as someone else pointed out, we are already funded so it doesn't affect me. In a shutdown my command will have a skeleton crew of first responders and people necessary to maintain plant equipment in a safe condition. That's it. If something else comes up and they are not involved in an essential function, they do the other jobs.
As far as back pay goes, I have learned to always volunteer to be the guy furloughed. Chances are the funding legislation that eventually passes will include back pay...not always, but usually.

don’t feel bad for you one bit. You likely get lots of other perks being federal employee that those of us in other jobs or self employed don’t get.
