There are essential and non-essential federal employees. During a shutdown the non-essential do not report to work while the essential MUST or risk termination. Neither group receives pay while the shutdown is in effect. When it's all settled and everyone gets their back pay, the non-essential group received paid days off while the ones that were required to report for duty got shafted.
Thats funny. Well, not really.
Yeah, that sucks.
Sorry you felt you needed to work for the feds. My Dad was a civil service employee. He worked hard, did a lot of good things, provided essential services, prepared for national emergencies and worked on a lot of floods and hurricanes. He knew what he exchanged for what he had and what he did. He also knew the private sector worked even harder than he did sometimes and had a lot more risk and sometimes more reward. He was a base hitter even though he had been a risk taker in his youth.
An occasional shut down was one of the things he expected.
Unfair? You knew the terms of the job when you accepted it didn’t you? If you didn’t, you know them now don’t you?
A lot of jobs now in the feral gubment are not anywhere close to essential.
AZ has a state law where the state general fund can’t end at the end of the fiscal year 6/30 in the red.
AZ legislature is controlled by Republicans.
Unlike the feds, AZ enforces its fiscal policy laws on the state books.
You’re not supposed to ask embarrassing questions!
Im the kid who has to poke the dead cow with a stick.
They’re all going to be shut down next week but that’s the fault of Jesus.........
The unemployment rate is low 3.7 nationwide. You can always find a new job.
Oh , sort of like the time I sent all my staff home for Christmas and stayed in country to tend the shop while they were gone since I didn’t have any little ones at home?
No, not really.
“When they complained about the stock market hit to their savings, he reminded them that most of his clients were small business owners with only savings. No pensions.”
Spot on. I’ve wasted enough time on whiners.
Because without them, in the long run, the agency's mission doesn't get accomplished. As with all legalisms, "essential" doesn't mean what you think it means.
I’d spend more time on this but not worth the effort. Guys like this are part of the problem these days. We are too comfortable and don’t have enough real problems to think about.
We need to miss a few meals, a few paychecks, a few warm nights in the house or even worse before we figure out what we have and that it is worth fighting for.
As a post script, here’s something to think about. On Veteran’s Day, the whole govt. shuts down and you get the day off to honor all the veterans in this country while the very veterans in the private sector you are honoring all have to work.........Weird, huh?
Proof that Jesus is on our side!
LOL!
Weird, huh?
Good point... Another reason for all of us to show honor and respect to the very group that has in many “Given Their All”
Keep poking. :)
I worked my entire life in a Tier I auto stamping plant in Detroit. While I never got laid off, the workers in the shop were always under the threat of being laid off. The 70's and early 80's were really bad for those folks.......
The Federal Government is bloated and inefficient.
I think we all understand that. I bet you could ask any Federal employee for examples and get a list a yard long.
In 99% of the time the inefficiency is people.
No one wants to hear they are part of the problem. I am empathetic as both of my parents were employed in State and Federal jobs. They were diligent and dedicated public servants. They both had great pensions and insurance.
But the reality is we keep sending reps to DC who spend more than we bring in. We spend without justifying that the program works, and they go on forever.
When it stopsand it will, people will lose their jobs. Thats not disrespectful, its the truth.
Its a term used that really doesnt reflect the real world.
For example, I work in a unit at the hospital. I supervise staff. For snow days, I am not essential. I can be out for several days and no one would notice. But if I were gone for a couple of weeks, stuff would go unpaid, unprogrammed, and unscheduled. Long term, my job is essential.
I think that is the difference. Non essential means the job is valid, but in the short term they can live without certain stuff getting done.
Well I’ll be darned! I’m so relieved.../s
