pay income taxes or else our bridges would collapse
Fuel taxes and freight taxes are supposed to be used to maintain the roads etc., not income taxes.
Around here (metro NYC) bridge tolls are used to fund other things (e.g. subways, skyscrapers), chump.
Originally bridge tolls were instituted to pay off the bonds issued to build the respective bridges. After that the tolls were supposed to be removed. (Ha, Ha.) But you friendly pols just couldn't part with all that money coming in. The bridges are just roadways that need to be maintained just like Fifth Avenue and the Brooklyn Bridge. And we have gasoline taxes to maintain old roads and build new ones. Bridges like the Throgs Neck Bridge (built early 60s) between the Bronx and Queens cost 25 cents each way when it opened. Now it's $8.50 each way now that those bonds have been paid off.
