Imperfect justice in that without the cooperation and testimony of the lover, there would be no solution to the crime and no conviction of the wife. Moreover, as a rule of thumb, the first to cut a deal with the prosecutor usually ends up with the best deal; and in this case, the wife was the initiator and prime planner of the murder and so deserved the greater punishment.
