NYC birder Molly Adams, 26, is leading the nations first-ever network of Feminist Bird Clubs to provide a safe opportunity for womxn, LGBTQ, and gender-nonbinary folks to practice bird-watching free from the constraints of the patriarchal world.
Founded in 2016, the first Feminist Bird Club was launched in Manhattan by Molly Adams, who graduated from Stony Brook University with a masters in marine science and who now works for the Wildlife Conservation Society in NYC.
Since the NYC clubs inception, Adams boasts of active chapters in NYC, Chicago, Boston, and Buenos Aires, all of which host monthly or weekly bird-watching treks. (Chapters are also currently being organized in Michigan and the San Francisco Bay Area).
The Feminist Bird Club describes itself as an inclusive bird watching club dedicated to providing a safe opportunity to connect with the natural world ... while working to protect the rights of all womxn, non-binary folks, and members of the LGBTQ+ community.
Not only that, but members have also successfully fundraised for Planned Parenthood ($300), Black Lives Matter ($4,600), and the New York Abortion Access Fund ($1,000), among a few other nonprofits.
Next year, the club will sell birding patches to benefit another nonprofit, and is currently looking for illustrators to create a new design. PJ Media reached out to Adams to ask why an explicitly feminist approach is necessary for birding, but she declined to respond.
Raising money is just one small thing we can do, but I look forward to seeing how much we can donate to another organization next year, wrote Adams in an October 26 newsletter.
The club recently hosted its most well-attended birding event yet.
This will only work if they do their bird watching naked. That way we could tell which are male and which are female.
That’s what I thought.
Sounds like some sort of dating operation.
Is Birding negatively affected by Climate Change?
Will they denounce all those male bird mating calls?
I think this is a good idea! Many mornings I wake up and don’t know what gender I am. When I go birdwatching I feel ostracized! Go Bernie!
What? Bird watchers are mostly white middle-aged or elderly women. Who are THEY threatening?
Intersexual feminism was defined here by another wise Freeper. It’s meaning is a crazy cat lady starter kit.
I went to the article. I would hit one of the bird watchers. The other women actually look like birds but Laz would have no problem.
Isnt she being a trifle Microaggressive? (smirk)
This is just the beginning of her everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, and insults....... whether intentional or unintentional.
Watch her communicate her hostility and negativity toward persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership in traditional white cultures.
Another aTtEnTiOn getter. Hey, look at MEEEEEEEEE!!! I’m in a special birding group that you aren’t allowed into.
Crows watching birds.
So the bird watching auxillary won't mind if I smash the birds' eggs because they aren't birds yet.
Go to hell ugly man hating witches.
The She-Wonym Penis Haters Club.
Good god.
Who knew that bird-satching was not a gender neutral activity? Unless of course it’s actually girl-watching.
“Intersectionality? Cool, sounds like sex is involved somehow.”
What if you see a person with boobs and a penis?
Actually, they are dinosaurs, so not lizards at all.
birds watching birds. Yeah....
You mean a male booby bird? Log it in your book, of course!
Sounds like a lesbian hookup club.
