As a kid we would catch chipmunks up at our cabin.
A string tied to a milk carton, with the string laying over a clothesline or branch. Peanuts inside the milk carton. The chipmunk would walk in and we would pull on the string so the mouth of the carton was upright and the little guy couldn’t get out.
We had made a big cage out of wire mesh and wood and at the end of the day would have a few chipmunks in there. In the morning though they would have all escaped. We couldn’t figure out how - but added more wire mesh, etc. each time.
I think we did that cycle for several days, but they always seemed to escape somehow.
We would still do catch them once in awhile and just release them right away. But it sort of lost the fun when we realized that they would never be pets, as they always figured out some way to escape.
It wasn’t until I was an adult that it dawned on me. My old man must have been releasing them every night!
First thing I thought, Mom and Dad were releasing them.
We used to catch pigeos with a stick, a string, a box and a piece of bread.
Kept us busy for most afternoons in August.
Once we actually caught one and really didnt know what to do.
It was in the box until the Dads came home. then the Dads told us to let it go.
Those WWII dads did not mess around.
