Yep - and any new technology starts high...partly because of development expenses and partly because it has a interesting uniqueness people are willing to pay more for to be ‘first on the block” with. Eventually the prices drop big time...Can now get a 80” LCD TV for waaaay less than a 40” used to cost.

About the SSD shown in the posted article, according to the vendor, Samsung claims a 1.5 million hour MTBF (for what that’s worth).

Anyway, on storage,...

Solid-state drive

Comparison with other technologies...

Comparison of NAND-based SSD and HDD

Reliability on storage retention

Solid-state drive
“If left without power, worn out SSDs typically start to lose data after about one to two years in storage, depending on temperature. New drives are supposed to retain data for about ten years.[5] MLC and TLC based devices tend to lose data earlier than SLC-based devices. SSDs are not suited for archival use.”

Hard disk drive
“If kept in a dry environment at low temperature, HDDs can retain their data for a very long period of time even without power. However, the mechanical parts tend to become clotted over time and the drive fails to spin up after a few years in storage.”

Snagged said SSD for $66 from Newegg on Wed. RAM has gone down as well but still a ways to go. I build my own Desktops every 6-8 years. I don’t necessarily save money over pre built PC’s but I get rock solid hardware vs the skimpy power supplies, cheesy cases, flimsy vertical DVD drives, and the limited upgradability Motherboards you get with all but the top line pre built.

“FWIW, I bought an Intel 512GB SSD from Newegg on Nov 1 for $75. No ship, no tax”

Is that the 920 model? nice drive the equal speed wise to the Samsung 860 EVO. Newegg has/had this via eBay for $55 in the last day or two.

Thanks, dennisw. I only upgrade hardware once in a great while but do like to try to catch up on knowledge about newer stuff once in a while.

If it’s a laptop (and I love Lenovo, writing on an s30 right now), you’ll have to use the drive dock to do the clone/image. No big deal. Put the new SSD in the drive dock, hook the drive dock to the laptop via USB and clone to that. Then switch the laptop SSD with the new SSD and you should be ready to go.

I’ve done this many times for folks and it’s not that hard. Remember that youtube is your friend.

Here’s the drive I bought. Newegg’s price has gone up since then.

I am going to refer to your post in the future. When you do this you don’t get asked to enter a windows ten key? This never happened? Your new SSD clone is so perfect that it emulated the Windows 10 ID of the drive it was cloned from?...I suppose.

BTW for legit windows 10 keys go to the UK ebay. They go for about $4. Then download win 10 from Microsoft site onto a bootable flash drive/ Microsoft site does the for you. IOW you do not have create the bootable flash dr. MS does it for you.

So with Win 10 on a bootable flash drive + your UK ebay Win 10 key you can fresh install the latest version of Win 10 onto freshly bought SSD.

66$ is amazingly inexpensive! Must have been some kind of Black Friday deal. I last built my PC desktop in 2014. I would build a new one now but RAM prices are too high.
For 16GB (two 8GB modules) DDR4 is way overpriced compared to DDR3

I haven't found a deal on the 2TB SSD but Micro center has a 1 TB for $130.

Sure it is their house brand but at that price ...

I might use that to build a new RAID drive to backup everyone’s pics and music.

The clone is an EXACT image of your system drive, including any Windows or other software keys you’ve previously entered. Office, Windows, etc. MSFT doesn’t know you’ve changed drives. Prolly doeesn’t care, either.

Looks like the price on the Samsung has dropped to $65.

The price drop makes sense. The KC MicroCenter had a display case full of the 500 Gig drives.
