Police found a human placenta in an Ontario park. Turns out it was just part of a 'holistic' ritual

An Ontario mother who dumped her bloodied placenta in a public park was just practising a “holistic” ritual to mark her child’s first birthday, police say.

While hospitals consider placentas medical “waste,” in some home birth practises the organ is considered special and “spiritual,” scholars say. Popular rituals include burying it under a favourite plant, tree or shrub, or eating it — a practice that comes with risks to mothers and their babies, and that some doctors have said borders on cannibalism.

On Tuesday, Peel Regional Police issued an alert appealing for the public’s help finding a woman and child “in possible medical distress” after a man walking his dog in Sugar Maple Woods park in Mississauga found a placenta and umbilical cord, with what appeared to be forceps and clamps attached to it, in bushes about three metres off a pathway.

The placenta appeared fresh.

After a medical examiner confirmed the material was human, a cadaver dog trained to locate and follow the scent of a decomposing human body was sent in to search the area, along with a public search unit, said Peel Police Sgt. Matt Bertram.

Hours after the public appeal, a 27-year-old woman contacted police to say the placenta belonged to her.

The woman told police she gave birth a year ago at home, assisted by a midwife. The placenta was preserved and kept for “holistic” purposes, police said, before it was returned to nature on Monday — reportedly the child’s first birthday.

“She said she had it frozen, which is why a year later it still seemed fresh,” Bertram said.

Police confirmed her story, he said.

Placenta is a dish best served cold.

Not when you can add lasagna noodles and sauce.

I hope you didn't have to look up "polenta"!

It's one of my favorites when I don't worry about carbs.

Wow that looks GREAT!

Gonna have to ask mom if she knows of it.

Though it says it was originally a northern Italian peasant dish and her parents are from Sicily.

Pop was from southern Italy.

Described as a “simple yet satisfying dish”

May simple dishes are very satisfying.

It’s like “grits” for Italians.

But coarser, with yellow corn. With meat sauce and cheese topping.

"or eating it — You serve it with fava beans."

With a Cabernet, I suppose.

I was advised, back when, that you try to match the color of the wine with the color of the meat.

A white with pork, and fish, red with... I've always thought a rose would go with hot dogs...

So, a wackadoodle placed a placenta in a park is ok but a wedding photographer tinkling on a tree gets arrested.

That was funny. I was thinking you put that together but it turns out the original idea came from Al Franken.

BTW I heard many years ago that some people eat placenta but when I saw one it did not look at all appetizing.
