An Ontario mother who dumped her bloodied placenta in a public park was just practising a holistic ritual to mark her childs first birthday, police say.
While hospitals consider placentas medical waste, in some home birth practises the organ is considered special and spiritual, scholars say. Popular rituals include burying it under a favourite plant, tree or shrub, or eating it a practice that comes with risks to mothers and their babies, and that some doctors have said borders on cannibalism.
On Tuesday, Peel Regional Police issued an alert appealing for the publics help finding a woman and child in possible medical distress after a man walking his dog in Sugar Maple Woods park in Mississauga found a placenta and umbilical cord, with what appeared to be forceps and clamps attached to it, in bushes about three metres off a pathway.
The placenta appeared fresh.
After a medical examiner confirmed the material was human, a cadaver dog trained to locate and follow the scent of a decomposing human body was sent in to search the area, along with a public search unit, said Peel Police Sgt. Matt Bertram.
Hours after the public appeal, a 27-year-old woman contacted police to say the placenta belonged to her.
The woman told police she gave birth a year ago at home, assisted by a midwife. The placenta was preserved and kept for holistic purposes, police said, before it was returned to nature on Monday reportedly the childs first birthday.
She said she had it frozen, which is why a year later it still seemed fresh, Bertram said.
Police confirmed her story, he said.

I hate strolling through the park and finding a placenta.
No more midnight snacks for me. You never know what someone might have put in the freezer.
Placenta Park-Marking has long been a tradition in Canada. Of course, I never go to the park there.
Yep.The darn things are slippery, you can easily take a fall.
“...found a placenta and umbilical cord, with what appeared to be forceps and clamps attached to it, in bushes about three metres off a pathway. “
So... her ‘holistic ritual’ consisted of dumping a baggie with biological and medical waste in a public park ?
I’m surprised a coyote or raccoon didn’t find it first.
Put it at the location she conceived the child at.
Loony.
CPS might want to schedule weekly visits.
Just my opinion of course.
I thought they tasted by chicken.
