One could also read the scene as the kid sitting alone has a special place of honor; He commands an entire side of the table! The lowly other kids, on the other side of the table, dont get that.
I’m surprised that they haven’t called out the boy character sitting at the HEAD of the table. They would ask: “Why isn’t the girl character there?”
Perhaps they see color before gender?

Someone else said that screenshot has been altered, and the original cartoon has Lucy sitting beside Franklin. And look: beside Franklin there's a plate and two desserts -- just as you'd expect bossy Lucy to have! And Charles Schultz was a diehard lib and insisted on having a black character. He never would have allowed that character to be treated poorly.

Linus is at the head of the table because he's going to give the sermon at the beginning of the meal.
Next to Linus is Sally, who has a crush on him.
Next to Sally is Charlie Brown, who is her brother.
Next to Charlie Brown is Peppermint Patty, who has a crush on Charlie Brown.
The "kid with the funny looking nose" is sitting next to Peppermint Patty.
