Gas mask was so he could operate in tear gas. The Good Guys certainly aimed the gas-ball for his groin, talk was that they wee only about 25 yards away.

I did figure that the gas mask was to deal with tear gas.... Just missed the tiny fact that the object hit a little further south than I had realized!
I would think paintballs would be a useful less-than-lethal riot control tool.
