Had sniffles, runny nose, sneezing and a terrible cough.

You may have had a bad cold, which is not affected by the flu vaccine.

Why would anyone want to get a flu shot of last year’s flu vaccine? 😳

Quite frankly, I think it’s just a marketing gimmick by pharma. I have never had a flu shot and only ever had “the flu” twice in 68 years.

I haven’t had a flu shot since I got out of the Air Force in 1992. Haven’t had a cold or the flu since that time.

Yup. It’s a gimmick.

Me neither. It’s a gimmick for the sheep mentality.

I got a flu shot once when I was in the Navy. They lined us up and forced us to get a swine flu shot. Haven’t had one since and never had the flu.

I had a horrible flu last year. I then got pneumonia. It was brutal. I did not get the flu shot.

I got the flu shot almost a week ago. I hope I fare much better this season.

Influenza has specific symptoms. Many people get a runny nose or chest congestion and call it the flu. Over the counter medications are labeled for "cough cold and flu" further confusing the general public as they address symptoms, not the infection.

If you have a 101 temp and your muscles and joints hurt along with the congestion, you more than likely do have the flu. The USAF used to call everything else a URI, upper respiratory infection (nonspecific) and give out APCs and turpen-hydrate cough syrup by the gallons.

I’ll be 67 in January. I’ve had the flu maybe 3 times in my life. I got my 1st flu shot about a month ago. I was worried, but still fine.

I’ve never had the flu shot, never had the flu. My doctor says take one. My pharmacist son says not to take one.

Same reasons posited here, various strains not covered, etc, plus, the vaccine has metal in it and he doesn’t think it is worth the risk. Dr. says it is up to me, so, I don’t get the shot.

Agree with you re: Vit D.

Six years ago I started taking one 5000 iu capsule a day.

Except for some seasonal stuff, I haven’t been sick since. I’m not saying Vit D is a miracle drug and your mileage may vary but it has been a winner for me.

Oh, more germane to the post: never had a flu shot, don’t plan to start. My doc suggests a flu shot every fall during my visit to him. My response: “Hey Doc, you’re the doc. When did I last have the flu?”

If there’s any chance it keeps me from getting what I had last year, I don’t care. A little mercury never killed me like this almost did.

Normally i come down with a cold only once every 2 or 3 years. Then one day my doctor talked me into getting my very first flu shots and i came down with a cold about 2 or 3 times that year. Next year my doctor gave me another flu shot and again i came down with a cold a few times within the year. A third time i got my flu shot and i was coming down with a cold once every 5-6 weeks the entire year!

That was it. When my doctor tried to talk me into getting a flu shot again, i said no. And i went back to coming down with a cold only once every 2-3 years. But to this day my doctor tries to push me into getting another flu shot.

From the article:
The flu shot does not protect against:

The common cold
Pneumonia (although it may protect you from pneumonia as a complication of the flu)
Bronchitis
Stomach flu

...
Anyone over the age of 65 is considered to be in a high-risk category and should have a flu vaccine every year. The vaccine is not quite as effective at preventing the flu in this age group. However, among older adults who do not have chronic illnesses and who do not live in nursing homes, the shot is 30 percent to 70 percent effective at preventing hospitalizations from pneumonia and the flu.

Among older adults who do live in nursing homes or have chronic illnesses, the vaccine is 50 percent to 60 percent effective at preventing hospitalizations from pneumonia and the flu, and up to 80 percent effective at preventing death from the flu

Huh ? 30 to 70% effective to prevent hospitalizations ? When the effectiveness of the flu shot in that age range for the most common flu strain was 17% ?

but they have climate change nailed down.

CDC Studies\Results came from 5 states: WI, MI, PA, TX, WA

On top of everything else, CDC claims, in general, 40% total effectiveness last season, after a spit load of caveats and hoop-thru jumping. They picked and chose the age ranges for each type of flu.

None were very effective for seniors 65 and older for the most common strains.

https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/acip/meetings/downloads/slides-2018-06/flu-02-Flannery-508.pdf

No shot for me, again, this season.

Here’s how to avoid a flu or a cold. Maintain personal cleanliness and don’t touch your face without washing your hands first. You could easily survive the bubonic plague following those rules.

At the time i was working in a warehouse where i had to touch all sorts of objects and surfaces touched by others. We were always told if you are sick, dont come to work. But still, many came to work very sick. I tried to wash my hands and often as i could while in that place, but i still got sick.

Actually the opposite. You need to work out your immune system by exposing it to germs.

Then you must have also touched your face a lot. Viruses ride on bacteria, and bacteria get into your body through your orifices, not through your skin. And all your orifices are on your face. The ones that aren’t already covered, that is.
