Why You May Still Get Sick After a Flu Shot (Like I did!)

Many of us have heard stories of people who still got sick even after getting a flu shot. Or perhaps you got the flu shot only to find yourself sick a few weeks later anyway.

When they make vaccine they have to make a guess as to what strains of flu are likely to be circulating 12-18 months in the future.

Very often they are wrong.

I got my flu shot on October 26 and felt kind of miserable for about a week.

Had sniffles, runny nose, sneezing and a terrible cough.

The cough and upper chest congestion lingered a bit, but thankfully I’ve recovered for the last two weeks.

Hope you feel better soon!!!

I think they say it will reduce your chance of getting the flu, and maybe reduce the effects if you do. not totally prevent it.

I’m 64. Maybe I should get two shots?

I’m old (83 years old) and my doctor recommends an annual flu shot. I’ve gotten one every year. I used to get flu once or twice every year, but no I haven’t had it for maybe 15 years.

The other thing that may be working is that I take two 5000 IU capsules of vitamin D3 every year, and that’s supposed to help a lot, too. It’s more than the gubbermint recommends, but it works great more me. My daughter, who’s a nurse, actually takes 5 capsules a day, and suffers no harm.

A virus can mutate or remain generally hidden and not be covered by a flu shot. It’s not a 100% guarantee.

Was sick for three days after getting the flu shot this year. Nearly had to go to the ER a few years ago. I’m not doing this anymore.

This is a CYA article for the CDC.

They highly recommend you get the shot but then offer reason why it might not work.

That bottle of capsules will last a loooong time.

You can take mine if you want it. I'm 62 and never get a flu shot. I don't get the flu either.

Because they guess poorly at which strain to protect against.

I had my ONLY flu shot in 1972 while in the USAF.

I joined the Air Force in 1965. They didn’t have flu shots that year. AF started giving flu shots fall of ‘66, and I had to take one every year until I retired in ‘87. I had the flu at least once every year. I haven’t had a shot since then, and have not had the flu. I have seldom even had a cold.

When they make vaccine they have to make a guess as to what strains of flu are likely to be circulating 12-18 months in the future. Very often they are wrong.

Or ... they are completely right and decimate one flu strain population which frees another opportunistic and potentially more dangerous flu strain to replace it in the ecosystem, thus giving the appearance that they guessed wrong. Either way ... bad idea.

Better idea :

Vitamin D for influenza
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4463890/

“A colleague of mine and I have introduced vitamin D at doses that have achieved greater than 100 nmol/L in most of our patients for the past number of years, and we now see very few patients in our clinics with the flu or influenzalike illness. In those patients who do have influenza, we have treated them with the vitamin D hammer, as coined by my colleague. This is a 1-time 50,000 IU dose of vitamin D3 or 10,000 IU 3 times daily for 2 to 3 days. The results are dramatic, with complete resolution of symptoms in 48 to 72 hours. One-time doses of vitamin D at this level have been used safely and have never been shown to be toxic. We urgently need a study of this intervention. The cost of vitamin D is about a penny for 1000 IU, so this treatment costs less than a dollar.”

Further reading indicates K2 in combination with D3 provides additional benefits with absorption. Read the reviews :

https://www.amazon.com/Vitamin-Organic-Coconut-Absorption-Certified/dp/B07255MPRN/

If I so much as get a sniffle during flu season, I drop the vitamin D hammer. I haven't had the flu since making this change. Many of my relatives were flu shot advocates. But the majority of them too have switched away from the flu shot as well. The worst flu my mother ever had was right after getting her flu shot years ago. She hasn't had one since. Good luck to you!

I have never gotten sick from a flu shot, also never have I ever had the flu after getting a flu shot.

I’ve never had a flu shot.

No vaccine is guaranteed. No medical procedure is guaranteed. It's possible you would have had a more serious case of the flu without the vaccine. Maybe it could have killed you and the vaccine saved your life.

Everyone's body is different. Some people are allergic to things that don't bother you. Some people can die from a wasp sting, others can get hundreds and don't die. Some vaccines don't work as well because the virus mutates. I have not had the flu in 30 years, with and without the vaccine. I haven't had a cold/cough in at least 10 years. Some people get several colds every year.

The odds of getting flu are lower in people as a GROUP. Just like anything in life. Some people smoke two packs a day and never get lung cancer. Some people who smoke 1/4 as much die from lung cancer. As a group, people who smoke have a high chance of getting lung cancer. There's no WTF. It happens all the time in many parts of life.

All that said, I have you have a quick recovery!

At our age we normally get the High-Dose vaccine. It would not be useful to get multiple injections.
