Community remembers hundreds killed during Transgender Day of Remembrance
Las Vegas Now ^ | November 20, 2018 | Darlene Melendez

Every year, Nov. 20 marks the International Transgender Day of Remembrance. The solemn day highlights the lives the transgender community lost throughout the year.

A total of 369 transgender men and women were killed this year. That's up more than 100 from last year, according to Jamie Lee Sprague-Ballou, founder of Las Vegas TransPride. Thirty of those deaths this year were in the United States.

Three-hundred-sixty-nine cards covered a wall at a vigil hosted by Sprague-Ballou and other members of the transgender community. The cards depicted the 369 faces, along with the 369 names of their trans brothers and sisters whose lives were cut short.

One woman took the stage to share the story of her friend Krista. Krista was the first trans woman murdered in the United States in 2018.

"This year: Jan.1, 2018, Krista became the first trans woman to be murdered in the U.S.," Ballou shared. "This wonderful and talented woman's life was brutally taken at age 42."

"These are hate crimes," stressed Sprague-Ballou. "We're trying to bring the awareness of the hatred that exists against our community."

However, Sprague-Ballou is thankful for strides made in Las Vegas. Just this year, the Clark County School District passed a policy allowing gender diverse students to use restrooms consistent with their gender identity and also protecting their corresponding pronouns.

"Here in Las Vegas we are privileged, but we need to remember other places that don't have the privileges like we do," explained Sprague-Ballou. "We would love there not to be a Transgender Day of Remembrance where we don't have to have this day; where people would just know how to exist with us, and we'd not have that fear."

To try to make that dream a reality, Sprague-Ballou, other members of the trans community, and allies read the new batch of names aloud every year.

Hundreds of people killed by other people in acts of hate.

"Fernando was a trans man who was killed while watching tv at his place," read one person.

"The victim's body was found by two walkers hanging from a tree," read another person.

Every year, by sharing their stories, they work harder to make sure none of their trans brothers and sisters died in vain.

"We carry their names, and we carry their hurt with us," said Sprague-Ballou. "I would love it if we can come one year and say, 'We have no names to read this year because everyone is treating us like people.' What kind of world would that be?"

Does these stats count suicides towards transgender being killed? The suicide rate is very high with transgender people.

https://ncadv.org/blog/posts/domestic-violence-and-the-lgbtq-community

9 Quick Statistics about Domestic Violence and the LGBTQ Community

26% of gay men and 37.3% of bisexual men have experienced rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner in their lifetime, in comparison to 29% of heterosexual men.

In a study of male same sex relationships, only 26% of men called the police for assistance after experiencing near-lethal violence.

Awwwww, woe is poor wittle dickchopped me!

They’re building themselves up into a certified victim group, complete with their own “holocaust,” victims, martyrs, cemeteries, annual remembrances.

When do they get a whole month of their own? Dickchopper Month, during which all the TV shows turn their minds to the poor victims of mental illness who thought they could cure their problems by lopping it off.

women who leave heterosexual relationships to escape abuse are sometimes surprised to learn that women can beat women hard too.

Many of these Transgenders are “Sex Workers” (T-Boy Hookers). Many ply their trade as are street walkers and lot lizards.

A very notorious and violent lifestyle for sure. However, it’s also a choice to do such a living.

So 369 transgenders were killed in a year. Woopdie-do.

How many straight people were killed during the same period?

I suspect the transgenders killed are a drop in the bucket compared to straights who were killed. I don't have any stats to back that supposition up, but it would only seem logical that many more straights were killed during the same time.

So where is the community outpouring of remembrance for them?

And why do we still sprinter these groups off like they are something special? Aren't all people deserving of remembrance?

No wonder our country is so divided. We divide it up into pieces ourselves.

When the democRATS persist in calling everyone who doesn't agree with them or who offends them in the slightest way, racists, sexists, homophobes, xenophobes (not sure what that one even means), they continue to exacerbate divisions, not heal them.

Celebrations like this transgender one in Nevada only serves to divide the country even more.

Yeah, my question is killed how, exactly?

Mostly by a “lover” in their “community.”

Exactly and what about those that regret all the physical adaptions they have undergone and want to return to their original sex?

I did a search for the percentage of transgenders in the USA by State name, and it is, on average, 3.5% whereas in the District of Columbia it is 8 or so %.

Why are we kowtowing to that percentage of people? Far better to pay attention to the women’s vote or black and Asian voters.

Also by rough trade when a man or woman unwittingly is brought into a homosexual (or even heterosexual) encounter.

...and also protecting their corresponding pronouns.

Anecdotal story and no time for context, but I overheard a college student recently ask his lunch mates: "What's a pronoun?"

In a nation of 326,000,00 people, 376 murders seems far below the annual per capita for other demographics.

I do believe the 376 murders were worldwide, “Only 30 in USA” and yet they still whine.
