Long-lost audio tape shows Rep. Ryan planned to rescue willing residents
(Editors Note: Sunday marks the 40th anniversary of a still-shocking mass-killing that left more than 900 people dead in Jonestown, a remote settlement in Guyana founded by cult leader Jim Jones. Most were poisoned with a cyanide-laced drink. Leo J. Ryan, a Democratic lawmaker from San Francisco, had traveled to Jonestown to investigate reports of people being held against their will in Jonestown. Ryan and four others were fatally shot at a nearby airstrip. Rep Jackie Speier, D-Calif., then a Ryan staffer, was among several more who were shot repeatedly and left for dead at the airstrip. The mass killing began soon afterwards.)
The 40-year-old audiotape sounded tinny and indistinct to Rep. Jackie Speier. In her Capitol Hill office, the California Democrat leaned forward in her chair to listen to the voices from the recording on the laptop computer.
On the tape were her former boss, Rep. Leo J. Ryan, her 28-year-old self and Debbie Layton Blakey, an escapee from the settlement in Guyana called Jonestown. Speier had not heard the recording since shortly after it was made on September 1, 1978. After the National Archives made the tape available a few years ago, Speier said she was eager to be one of the first to listen to it.

Interesting that the linked article (and Congresswoman Spier) failed to mention the “others” who died on that airstrip, along with Ryan. They included NBC news correspondent Don Harris; NBC videographer Bob Brown, San Francisco Examiner photographer Greg Robinson and a defecting member of the People’s Temple. In fact, I’m guessing the audio came from footage shot by Bob Brown before he was gunned down.
But Ryan’s death is the only one that apparently matters. And I’m guessing he invited the media to publicize his trip to Jonestown and raise his political profile. Unfortunately, most of the media contingent paid for that mistake with their lives.
You are knowledgeable. Did Ryan clear this with the State department?
Was the CIA aware of Jones in Guyanna?
Just ran across that group the other day...
IIRC, Willie Brown, form mayor of San Francisco, even defended him after the Jonestown murders.
Yes, Milk was a strong supporter of Jim Jones.

that clip came was the opening to Boardwalk Empire
this is my favorite clip but i wish her audio was better, i guess it’s the detached way she sings, and only song she ever did with the band

“The drink was Kool-aide, hence the expression. I wonder how many under 50 realize that was the origination of the expression?”
They don’t, hence they use it in the totally wrong way.
Most under the age of 50 realize the origin of the Kool aid expression.
Heck, on another thread, few knew that years ago elevators had human operators who called out the numbers and departments of what was on the various floors.
Jones was a commie.
Jim Jones sent him a letter when Milk’s boyfriend killed himself.
The 80s as an American teen was something else.
I was in my 20s.

Within the first-hand experience of many living today, muself included.
Yep, Jim Jones was an integral part of the progressive Dem machine, close buddy of Milk, Mayor Moscone, Willie Brown and the D.A. at the time, Joe Freitas. In many ways, he was the prototype of today’s Democrat party: race-hustling, gay-supporting, voter fraud, ballot-stuffing, etc etc
I’ve read the book. Drink the Kool-aide was in use before Jamestown. Jefferson Airplane headlined for Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters in the early 1960s at a series of “Electric Kool-Aide Acid Test” performances.
Drink the Kool-Aide meant on LSD back then...
Thanks for confirming my recollection. It’s been a few years since the Sixties. And the youngsters think it all began with them....
Nope. Flavor-Aid made by the Jel Sert Company not Kool-aide which is made by Kraft.
At the time you could not get Kool-aide in South America.
The Kesey/Prankster phrase was “are you on the bus”
Marxists believe that the whole Jonestown disaster was a CIA plot to discredit the Left.
Jim Jones was beyond “gay supporting”, he sodomized men including numerous within the “Temple” including the doc who mixed up the poisoned brew. Rumor has it that Jim Jones and Harvey Milk had sex together.
