High School Bans Expensive Winter Coats to Stop 'Poverty-Shaming'

A HIGH SCHOOL IN England has banned students from wearing expensive winter coats in an attempt to stop the shaming of those less fortunate or struggling financially. Woodchurch High School in Birkenhead, located in northwestern England, sent a letter to parents earlier this month announcing that the restriction would be enforced after Christmas. Rebekah Phillips, the head teacher at the school for students 11 to 16 years old, told CNN that she was "mindful that some young people put pressure on their parents to purchase expensive items of clothing," but that these jackets "cause a lot of inequality" between the students. "These coats cause a lot of inequality between our pupils," Phillips said. "They stigmatize students and parents who are less well off and struggle financially."

Maybe the poverty-stricken freeloaders NEED some shaming.

A little incentive to get off their dead a$$ and EARN enough money to buy such a coat.

Socialism seeks to make (almost) everyone equally miserable.

"These coats cause a lot of inequality between our pupils,"

Coats do not cause inequality. Differences in talent, ability, effort or resources cause inequality.

Being poor is nothing to be ashamed of. Staying poor is another matter.

This a great SOCIAL benefit. This allows the “Children of Privelage” the equal chance to get that wonderful “time off of school” trying to recover from the cold/damp sickness brought on by inadequate protection. No warm hats, no warm boots and for darn sure, no extra snuggy gloves.
Typical Socialism stupidity...driving EQUALITY DOWNWARD rather than trying to left everyone UPWARD.

That’s why everyone in socialist countries looks so poor…oh, and the fact that the Greedy Government takes everyone’s money so they all ARE poor, equality in misery.

I outfitted our kids from garage sales and found lots of nice high dollar clothing for pennies. Would this school make me chunk the well made and warm name brand garage sale coats by making me break the budget to purchase cheaply made off brand coats?

In high school my daughter discovered the lost and found bin was better than the mall.

This is not new. My high school in a north Chicago suburb did this back in the 60s. Some girls were wearing very expensive stuff to school. I think its crazy. Normally you can just call it out. You don’t need a rule. And frankly, I have an equal problem with the moms that let their girls go to school with a thousand dollar jacket and the moms that allow their kids to envy a thousand dollar jacket. Why should we protect the materialistic want-a-bes from the materialistic have-nots.

Back then as now, most of the kids had faded jeans and tee shirts, not noticing what other kids wore.

How many successful peopl, who rose up from poverty have stated that their struggle with poverty as children are why they are successful? Because they knew they wanted better?

Not defending folks who humiliate or intentionally pick on those who are poor, but the idea no one can have nice things because others can’t afforf it is nonsense

I don’t think they would mind if you bought cheap coats at a second hand store.

😉

Excellent! My grandfather would say “Anyone can be broke from time to time, but poor is a way of life.”

I can just hear the parents on that one now:

What do you mean my daughter does not have to wear a mask? Are you calling her ugly?? You make Judith Penske wear a mask and she is the ugliest bitch in this school!!

I went to a school that had uniforms; dark pants, white shirts and blue sweaters. Mine were bought at the second hand store. The wealthy kids had wool, linen and cashmere.

In any case, when the parents picked us up after school, my dad was in a Chevy Nova and they had Cadillacs. There’s no hiding money.
