Chess is a similar story. There has never been a female world champion, and the top-ranked woman, Hou Yifan of China, is ranked 91 in the world, according to objective Elo ratings calculated from game results.

Unequal outcomes, especially at the extremes, do *not* prove the process was unfair.

Listen, they are not using Pink chess pieces.

Women would win if the chess pieces were of two shades of pink.

Got that?

French World Scrabble? Do all the words have to be in French?

My Mum and Dad were children of the Depression. They both grew up in very difficult "circumstances"...very possibly worse than those of the typical family of the era.As a result neither of them were able to go to college despite being quite intelligent.

I cannot be sure about my Dad but my Mum,despite her relative lack of "formal" education, routinely completed the Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle.

In pen.

My guess is that she would have held her own in any Scrabble game...at any level.

Either my wife or myself is a glaring exception to this rule.

My husband, who says he is a poor speller, wins at most game of strategy. It is disgusting.

Many games depend on the hand drawn and strategy can not pull it off, however. Then it is luck.

I am a much better driver than he is, BTW.

Solving cryptic crosswords is even more of a feminine activity, since you have to understand the meanings of words and have a lot of literary and historical knowledge. The best solvers? Nearly all men. Here are the results from last month’s Times championships:

Men are more diverse. On average women are better at Scrabble, but championship scrabble is about extremes and when you get to extremes of almost anything, there will be more men at the extreme end.

Wouldn’t surprise me if there were a sex-linked difference.

Memorization and some sort of spacial processing and the competitive drive to “train”, compete, and win are what’s required. The one competitive player I know has zero interest in the meaning or use of esoteric words—he just wants to compete and win.

My guess would be that there is a significantly higher ratio of men so driven, but that they make it to the highest levels and win at a level beyond that difference in numbers.

r1- I do not believe the process is unfair. In the world of chess, for a time, chess was somewhat of a ‘national sport’ in Russia. They groomed and tutored promising females assiduously - Russia would have taken great national pride in producing a female champion. Russian male chess champions dominated the game for 50 years from the late 40’s to the early 90’s.

When Ronaldus Magnus caused the collapse of the iron curtain, many emigrated to the US, and parked themselves in NYC. Subsequently, area schools began to win championships:

What remains interesting however, is the point of the thread (imo) - WHY is the female brain so far, incapable of such a summit?
To miss m and Mermaid - this is in no way a bash at women. In truth I find your comments interesting and informative on the various subjects we prattle on about here on FR.
In fact I believe these 3 sisters could beat anyone on FR in a game of chess, BLINDFOLDED!

“My Brilliant Brain” is about the Polgar sisters, Susan in particular (@47 min.). Natgeo had her in an fMRI to actually look into the area of her brain she used to process chess problems (it was the ‘facial recognition’ area).
Fascinating.

Off topic, but I’d like to share my recent discovery of a female prodigy, Alma Deutscher:

She’s completely captivating to me:

If women wear low cut outfits then the men would be distracted. You can tell in Scrabble when the guy spells out BREASTS for 100 points....
