Channing Dungey, the ABC Entertainment president who made the bold decision to yank Roseanne after its star made a racist tweet, has resigned her post.
Dungey will be replaced by Karey Burke, the current head of programming at Freeform, ABCs sister cable network.
Im incredibly proud of what the team and I have accomplished over the years, and all the meaningful and impactful programming weve developed, Dungey said in a statement. This job has been the highlight of my career. While Ive loved every moment and knew I could call ABC home for many years to come, Im excited to tackle new challenges.
It was Dungey who announced the cancellation of Roseanne after Roseanne Barr posted a racist tweet about Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett. Roseannes Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show, she said at the time.
Dungey became the first black American president of a major broadcast TV network when took she over the top post in 2016. Though she helped to launch new hits like The Good Doctor, her tenure was marred when uber-producer Shonda Rhimes and Kenya Barris (black-ish) left ABC Studios for rich new pacts at Netflix. She was widely praised, however, for canceling Roseanne and for figuring out a way to salvage the production by launching The Conners without Barr.
Burke brings a wealth of experience to the role as ABC Entertainment president. A veteran of the broadcast TV business, Burke began her career at NBC, where she rose through the ranks to oversee production of series including The West Wing, Will & Grace, and ER. She also helped to develop shows like Freaks and Geeks, Scrubs, Friends, Mad About You, and Just Shoot Me before eventually leaving the network to work as an independent producer.
She was named executive vice president of programming at Freeform in 2014.
Yes, she was the one who canceled it.
DUNGEY: Roseannes Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show she said at the time.
Who's sorry now,eh?
She was the one who cancelled Last Man Standing or, at least she took credit for it.
“I canceled Last Man Standing...ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey told reporters Tuesday...”
LOL..................
Trump should award the ABC patent monopoly over to the Tea Party. ABC did not earn it.
Yep. She made that "bold decision" as well.
ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey:
Couldnt possibly be that she was fired because shes incompetent and cost ABC millions of dollars.
Get ready for Dunghey’s the ol’ “Pay-Me-I’m-A Victim” ....a BET rerun.......
The real problem goes far beyond Channing all the way up to Iger and apparently the majority of Disney top execs who are zealots that have throughly politicized the company. I wouldn’t be surprised if one of them ordered the hit and Channing is just the fall girl.
Thanks for posting.
She was indeed the person who cancelled both Roseanne and Last Man Standing, as well as losing two of their top Creators/Producers. They were trying to build a "universe" around Shonda Rhimes' "Greys Anatomy" like NBC did with "Chicago Fire/Med/PD". They are last place in ratings and she has been a unmitigated disaster. There is no doubt she is being fired, but they are handling it carefully because she is a double protected class.
Are we sure?
The commercials and first episode of Last Man Standing on Fox were hilarious with all the digs they got in on ABC. Somehow, though, I doubt ABC’s shareholders were amused.
How has the ratings of the Connors been? It’s like having the Lucy show without lucy.
Now that she gone so will the show. How many episodes left?
Wonder if ABC paid Dungey to go away...
If so, how much?
Since when does bold equate to stupid?
If ABC paid Dungey off to the tune of big bucks, who’s stupid....?
Good point...
I really wanna know how much she got.
And I’m dang glad I’m not a shareholder.
Abysmal......
