Channing Dungey, the ABC Entertainment president who made the bold decision to yank Roseanne after its star made a racist tweet, has resigned her post.
Dungey will be replaced by Karey Burke, the current head of programming at Freeform, ABCs sister cable network.
Im incredibly proud of what the team and I have accomplished over the years, and all the meaningful and impactful programming weve developed, Dungey said in a statement. This job has been the highlight of my career. While Ive loved every moment and knew I could call ABC home for many years to come, Im excited to tackle new challenges.
It was Dungey who announced the cancellation of Roseanne after Roseanne Barr posted a racist tweet about Obama adviser Valerie Jarrett. Roseannes Twitter statement is abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent with our values, and we have decided to cancel her show, she said at the time.
Dungey became the first black American president of a major broadcast TV network when took she over the top post in 2016. Though she helped to launch new hits like The Good Doctor, her tenure was marred when uber-producer Shonda Rhimes and Kenya Barris (black-ish) left ABC Studios for rich new pacts at Netflix. She was widely praised, however, for canceling Roseanne and for figuring out a way to salvage the production by launching The Conners without Barr.
Burke brings a wealth of experience to the role as ABC Entertainment president. A veteran of the broadcast TV business, Burke began her career at NBC, where she rose through the ranks to oversee production of series including The West Wing, Will & Grace, and ER. She also helped to develop shows like Freaks and Geeks, Scrubs, Friends, Mad About You, and Just Shoot Me before eventually leaving the network to work as an independent producer.
She was named executive vice president of programming at Freeform in 2014.
I wish they would report what really happened. She wrote a tweet that liberals INTERPRETED as racist.
Yeah exactly.
Good to know the girls are sill in charge.
Schaudenfraude.
Wonder if this is the same guy who dropped “Last Man Standing” from ABC.
It hasn’t been a good week for executive females of color.
he’s a she.
Saw that coming. Affirmative action will only get you so far. You cost the company hundreds of millions of dollars, and they will end you, despite your value as a symbol.
Emotional knee jerk reaction temper tantrum can be tolerated for things that don't cost the company millions. Damage the bottom line, and they will show you the door. You just aren't worth that kind of loss to them.
Won't surprise me if they get someone else of "diversity" to replace her. It will probably be a female, because that's the in thing nowadays.
Hey now, Hey now,
Don’t dream it’s over!
(even though it IS over).
That was a bad snap decision that is still costing ABC millions of dollars on a show very likely headed for cancellation.
Praised for launching The Connors, with out Barr
Bwahahahahaha!
(Sound of a single shot in the hallway...)
This is shocking because there are rarely any consequences in Hollywood for politically correct decisions, even if they cost money.
It was not racist. It is true. She does look like that chimp in the movie.
Channing Dungey is a black woman. She is a "twofer" in the game of diversity politics. I wouldn't be surprised if she was behind dropping "Last Man Standing." At the very least, she probably signed off on it.
Might have been one of her employees with the same political bent as her.
There may be other screwups by her of which we are not informed, but the people at ABC and Disney know about them.
Another Perpetually Angry Black Woman bites the dust!!!! WHEEE!!!!
Next: She files a federal civil rights lawsuit, claiming ABC is racist.
.....it couldnt be that she was fired because shes incompetent and cost ABC millions of dollars LMAO.
Channing is so proud of herself!!! THAT will go far, Chan, Chan
Oh....Chan Chan is BLACK....Hey, Chan Chan....how about bringing Cosby back??
Is she also the genius who cancelled Last Man Standing?
