The red squirrel in the UK is a different species from the US red squirrel, JFTR.
There are lots of feral grey squirrels around Britain as well.

What I have heard is that the red squirrel is native and the grey is a non-native invader that someone introduced to Great Britain because they thought it would be cool to do so. The grey is now outbreeding the red and taking over.
The red squirrel is not the only creature native to Great Britain that is being replaced.
