Looking for recommendations for a high quality folding knife as a gift for my son. He likes knives that kind-of spring open. I'm not sure what to call the mechanism that springs open but is not a switchblade.
3.5 inches is legal where I live. I put a link to Spyderco as I understand they are one of the good companies.

Good knives. Just not assisted opening.
“Spring assisted tactical knife” is the phrase you might be looking for. I favor Kershaw, especially anything designed by Ken Onion. Google those together.

Thank you everyone. Haven’t made up my mind yet. But now I know I’ll be getting something lasting and memorable for a very special young man.
I know. I indicated I was kidding. I had this image of a kid strolling into school with a kabar fighting knife strapped to his hipboy, he would be drawn and quartered for that!
He has two balisongs already :) Practiced with them endlessly when he got his first one.

and a youtube review of it:
It’s not assisted, but it’s a flipper with a ball bearing pivot, so the blade deploys really well. Titanium scales, 3.5” blade, framelock, and barely makes your price range. I don’t own one, but my best non-assisted flipper does as well as my assisted knives.
For the assisted opening type knives I’ve always preferred the type Spyderco calls a “Flipper”. This has a protrusion that you “flip” with your index finger such as the Advocate or Hanan.
If there’s a chance of getting “stabby” then a good guard is nice so your hand doesn’t slip. On some knives the flipper will double as a guard.
I took my shotgun to school and put it in my locker to hunt on the walk home.
Try that today. Just let us know when you do, so we can all come and watch. Ha ha.
The times have changed! Now kids go to dance school.
