Looking for recommendations for a high quality folding knife as a gift for my son. He likes knives that kind-of spring open. I'm not sure what to call the mechanism that springs open but is not a switchblade.
3.5 inches is legal where I live. I put a link to Spyderco as I understand they are one of the good companies.
Buck, if they have the mechanism you describe.
Spyderco Harpy
I’ve carried a Cold Steel folding pocket knife for years. Reliable, sharp and safe when used in unconventional situations. Check them out.
Whatever you end up buying, warn/instruct him never to use the tip as an improvised screwdriver or prying tool or he will break it guaranteed.
Easy... ..
Get him a Cutco Pocket knife, the Black ones are really good
they hold and edge...
..free lifetime sharpening just mail to Cutco.
I’ve have had one for years, in fact it’s blade is such quality and it’s so easy that often times . I can sharpen it with the Lansky honing stones and sharpening kit.
I use it most everyday.
Excellent choice and it fits so well in any pocket. Enjoy.
Kershaw Onion or Leek.
Smooth opening similar to an auto.
Check out the US-made Kershaws. Im not saying those made elsewhere are not good, but those made in the US are excellent. The ones that have assisted opening called flippers will do what you are asking about.
I second the Kershaw line. Make sure it’s one of their US made models.
Benchmade is considered quite good around here. Lots of choices...

Kershaw... has some really nice blades, some with that mechanism, some without... some with katana tips, some with other kinds of shapes... bit expensive though... the one i have is made from two kinds of steel welded together to give a super edge, and a durable spine to prevent breaking...
i use my tools. so i am not just getting something for looks or cool, etc. and since what i have is good i only have a few... my swiss army knife and kershaw are two completely different things..
My husband loves the Kershaw pocket knives. The spring is really fast but it’d really is an impressive knife. His favorite is a Benchmade knife but they are really expensive. Kershaw website:https://kershaw.kaiusaltd.com. Hope this helps! Good luck!
Search Italian stiletto. Those are the ones in the movies that the hoods push a button and they spring into position. Just check your jurisdiction to make sure youre within the law.
ps: $25.29
Spyderco Paramilitary II. I’ve been carrying one for at least 5 years now. I carried a Tenacious before that.
That thumb hole makes it easy to open with either hand after a bit of practice.
I’ve had a couple of Benchmade knives for many years, and am very happy with them.
Something that locks when opened. Kinda sucks when it closes unexpectedly.
