A critic writing in the liner notes for Dusty Springfield’s greatest hits wondered if You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me was the first power ballad. The way Dusty reads it off I kinda thought ‘yeah’!

Ironically, one of the first power ballads was in 1972 - The Carpenters song, “Goodbye to Love” that featured a Fuzz/Heavy Metal-esque Guitar solo that was very “un-Carpenter-like”.

"Still Loving You" is in my top 5 power ballads. Amazing lyrical voice and guitar bridge. It may be at the top after Hysteria.
