I perceive, from the distance of age, that academics are claiming the high ground in many fields, and through their good-old-boy networks are muscling in and taking over in many areas. Hospitals I have more direct knowledge of; the structure hereabouts is already too heavy with management; incredibly they have hired a company of academics to organize and run their departments. (So why do we need those mgrs on payroll, then?)
I don't want to slide too far on this thread, but suffice it to say they are wreaking havoc with our health system. Professionals with years of experience are being demoted and young doctored academics are taking over - with all their wondrous theory and imagination. I predict they will shortly run our local healthcare into financial disaster... Medicare fraud (to maintain some sort of budget integrity) is becoming common.
My 'friend' has had his job replaced three times in nearly 20 years, and is trying to find a new position now in order to reach retirement. Where will it end?
This Ocasio Cortez fits as a good example (to me) of modern academics: she understands little about politics, history and economics, but she is fully confident of her superiority. She and I each graduated from Boston Univ, but I managed to get some practical knowledge in the processs. However, I will say that during my years there I noticed a slide away from practical knowledge into theory and, quite simply, academics, lots of courses teaching the same things, or nothing.
Ocasio Cortez IS an air-headed liberal jerk—common in academia. There’s usually no reasoning with them. Their superiority stinks like a lot of their body parts. Well put.

Took my 2nd masters from there! And the PhD courses, though I never had the guts for the exam. A lifetime ago, it seems.
I have a lovely niece who graduated BC and she is a good little liberal. Maybe 36 or 37 years old. Love her to death but I wouldn’t send any of my kids to an Ivy League school based on her and her sister who graduated Georgetown. Neither of them had a career to amount to much income producing activity. Both are doing well now, married to an engineer and a dentist. ;) But they are liberal and so confident of their superior knowledge. The BC one went back and got a degree to be a counselor but at a local public Texas university.
