Fall and winter is acqua alta season in Venice. The Italians have been building a system of flood gates to protect the city but construction has been ongoing for 15 years.

Queue global warming screams of outrage in 4, 3, 2, ....
(Global average air temperature for September 2018 by satellite measurement was 0.14 degrees warmer than when measurements began 1978.)

Didn’t they spend hundreds of millions on some sort of floating water abatement system that was supposed to stop this? I guess it didn’t work too well.

No, it was never started/never finished/perpetually in the process of being funded etc.. Then the mafia ahem, uh, appropriated some of the funding. It ain’t happening.

I was there 3 months ago.
The only thing which looked new were gondola-boat docks.
Some of the smaller bridges looked newer probably because the bridge was no longer high enough.
Rialto Bridge definitely looked newer but probably just repairs

I don’t know my history of Venice. But I do wonder, what was the idea behind building a city in which the streets are canals? And is the city also a series of islands in a river?
