The interference call is NOT automatic simply because the base runner does not confine himself to the 3-foot lane.

You have quoted a pertinent part of the rule. That is good.

However, in recent writings of the rule this part, "and in the umpire’s judgment in so doing interferes with the fielder taking the throw at first base" has been correctly extended to also referring to INTERFERING WITH THE CATCHER'S THROW TO FIRST BASE.
