I guess I’ll always be a Fender guy. Not only is the Les Paul too heavy compared to my Strat they also seem to me to have a slightly smaller fretboard. Since I have a fairly large hand and fingers it constricts me compared to the Strat, which just feels right to me.

Nothing against pickers who play Gibsons at all. As a pro level bassist I’ve played with many Les Paul guys and I have plenty of respect for them.

You can buy a really nice Tokai Les Paul made in Japan for a fraction of the cost of a Gibson, and they usually play better out of the box. Have a Love Rock from 2005 that is killer.

You can buy lots of guitars that look like Gibsons, play better than Gibsons, and cost a fraction of the price of Gibsons.

They're not Gibsons.

It's all about that name on the headstock.

They were still doing artisan handwork like scraping the bindings even on their relatively inexpensive guitars, and that was killing them, in my opinion.

What's killing Gibsons are their number one competitor; used Gibsons.

And it's about to get worse as Baby Boomers start dropping like flies, leaving collections of old guitars to their kids and grandkids who have no attachment to them and only want to flip them on Craigslist for a few bucks.

I have a J-45 with an adjustable bridge (ADJ). It was given to me in Virginia in ‘72. When I lived in Denver, in ‘79-80 it was my beer money. I played a lot of “cry in your beer” songs in a little bar up the street till the house band came in. Occasionally one of the bartenders would bring out his acoustic and play with me. Several times one of the house band guys came in early to play with us as well. Good times. I now play my J-45 in a senior center band, music out of the 20’s-40’s, having a great time.

As long as you enjoy it. I still go to bar jams in town and hang in pretty well. LOL.

First bass I ever had was a beautiful EBO. Great starter bass. Only downside was the short scale neck. And it had a good tone, but not THE tone. I found that tone in a Fender P-Bass I got in 1977 at a pawn shop. I set that bass down (still have it) when I got the Jazz Bass I play today. IMHO Gibsons rule for lead and rhythm but Fender rules the bass world.

Do it. During the summer I was going to 4 a week. Now it’s only one a week. Not a lot of players every week so if the guy running it asks me IF I want to play some more, BOOM! I’m there. One of the “brothers” that comes out once in a while called me a “Jam Whore”. LOL! Okay. I’ll take that.

True but you’d think other makers like Fender and Martin would have the same problem, yet neither of them has gone bankrupt. Why was only Gibson affected like this?

Gibson’s problem was King Henry trying to force innovation on his customers.

Robot Tuners? Any real player I know wouldn’t touch the meddlesome pains in the A$$.

Stupid paint jobs. Chinese made crap being passed off as made in USA.

Gibson is, and always was, a Luxury brand.

As for new mgt politics, let’s hope they’re not that stupid. Time will tell.

What Gibson buyers want, and have always wanted is tradition. Dead ringer reproductions of the companies standard production models from the late 50s and 60s.

Price is secondary.

I just paid $900 for a used reproduction of a 61 SG Junior.
While it’s not 100% exact, it’s more than close enough. And not a mark on it.

I consider that one of the best guitar buys I’ve made in decades.

You can thank top recording engineers/producers for that.

They took absolute crap bands (paying the rent) and processed the daylights out of them, into sounding like every other crap, hit band and Killed rock music.

Anyone who puts a Bigsby on a Paul deserves to be horse whipped.

If you really got to have the warmth of a Paul you can find Whatever Casters out there used that are made of maple over mahogany.

Then put a Floyd on it.
