And by chance, was it a protected spider? Since the EPA stopped cities from using CO2 to kill rats since it was not an approved insecticide , they could even say dish washing liquid cannot be used as an insecticide.
But I will say (as a renter in a populous city) that a propane torch is the best way to kill those "faster-than-light" drain flies (they have legs like grasshoppers for launching) when they are resting around the (clean) sink. Just slowly approach (using only your arms) with your afterburner on and them move in for the kill when about 4'' away.
