Like baseball, apple pie, and pickup trucks, rock and roll is considered quintessentially American. Sadly, many of the "best of" lists ranking rock bands are dominated by bands from the UK. Sure, there are some great bands from across the pond, but there's something special about the great rock bands from this country something rebelliously robust. American rock bands are the teeth of our communities and they aren't afraid to get messy. So, my list is comprised of bands that formed in America and whose majority of members are American (sorry, that means The Jimi Hendrix Experience is disqualified).
Before the list, a note of explanation may be in order: readers will notice the conspicuous absence of The Beach Boys as well as Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. As far as the E Street Band, and this is probably not fair, but the music is so identified with the Boss as to basically reduce the E Street Band to his backing band (they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a backing band). The Beach Boys, on the other hand, while producing one of the greatest albums of all time in Pet Sounds, are not a great band. In fact, the band barely played on Pet Sounds. The famed Wrecking Crew provided the music for the album, as they did for many of our most beloved albums from that time period. I even considered including the Wrecking Crew on the list.

Not interested in scrolling through a bunch of slides but my favorites are:
CCR
Allman Brothers
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Lovin Spoonful
No other American Bands come to mind. I could name considerably more British bands.
Foghat
“Van Halen”
Which one, Roth or Hagar?
Steely Dan
Foghat was from England, former members of Savoy Brown.
Don’t forget Devo.
Link Wray and The Wraymen
Mel Mark and Don.
So good, they blew Zep off the stage and Peter Grant had them tossed as Zep’s opening act.
Those north Florida boys are a rough looking crew aren’t they?
Zappa and the Mothers
Alice Cooper doesn’t even get mentioned?
The Doors and Jefferson Airplane were the biggest impact at the time they were introduced and had huge sales with their first albums.
Sadly, I was there when they debuted.
This is just not true. The "music" for the Pet Sounds album was provided by Brian Wilson who wrote every song, wrote the charts for every instrument in the Wrecking Crew studio orchestra and produced the album in a very hands on manner, instructing the Wrecking Crew virtually note by note on how he wanted his music played. The vocals on the album (ie. the trademark Beach boys sound) were performed and arranged by the Beach Boys. The Wrecking Crew was just the hired musicians Brian used to lay down instrumental and backing tracks while the band was out touring. They were an incredibly talented studio band but giving them credit for Pet Sounds is way wrong.
Thomas Earl Petty (October 20, 1950 October 2, 2017) was an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and actor. He was the lead singer of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, formed in 1976. He previously led the band Mudcrutch. He was also a co-founder of the late 1980s supergroup the Traveling Wilburys.
Petty recorded a number of hit singles with the Heartbreakers and as a solo artist. In his career, he sold more than 80 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time.[1] He and the Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Petty died on October 2, 2017, one week after the completion of the Heartbreakers’ 40th anniversary tour.
Roth is from Isreal, Hagar is Canadian, the bros were from Amsterdam
Boston....dont necessarily agree with their politics...but a true American band.
The lead singer had an amazing voice, up until he committed suicide.
No Tool? No Taddy Porter? No Highly Suspect?....
NO CLUTCH?!???
This list was put together by a bunch of old drunks.
