Like baseball, apple pie, and pickup trucks, rock and roll is considered quintessentially American. Sadly, many of the "best of" lists ranking rock bands are dominated by bands from the UK. Sure, there are some great bands from across the pond, but there's something special about the great rock bands from this country — something rebelliously robust. American rock bands are the teeth of our communities and they aren't afraid to get messy. So, my list is comprised of bands that formed in America and whose majority of members are American (sorry, that means The Jimi Hendrix Experience is disqualified).
Before the list, a note of explanation may be in order: readers will notice the conspicuous absence of The Beach Boys as well as Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. As far as the E Street Band, and this is probably not fair, but the music is so identified with the Boss as to basically reduce the E Street Band to his backing band (they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a backing band). The Beach Boys, on the other hand, while producing one of the greatest albums of all time in Pet Sounds, are not a great band. In fact, the band barely played on Pet Sounds. The famed Wrecking Crew provided the music for the album, as they did for many of our most beloved albums from that time period. I even considered including the Wrecking Crew on the list.

You’re right - but Beach Boys also in the early days played on all their records in the studio - I think Brian got the idea to use studio musicians from Spector and also Jan Berry who was using them long before Pet Sounds.
Wasnt the Beach Boy touring in Japan while Brian was laying down tracks for Pet Sounds - they could not have very well done both the tour and studio work.
The Wrecking “Crew” was not a set crew anyway, it was a lot of studio musicians living in LA and these were the best at the time and artists wanted them for that reason. Glen Campbell was included as part of the Crew before his own career took off.

Gotta agree about the Doors. U2’s Joshua Tree is a classic, but they’re not American anyway.

The second-best American rock, behind The Beach Boys, from 1963-68 was Tommy James and The Shondells: Mony Mony, Hanky Hanky, I Think We’re Alone Now, Crimson and Clover, Tighter and Tighter, Draggin The Line and Crystal Blue Persuasion and many more.

OK that was a whiff. Not that familiar with their origins.
Ronnie, Billy, Gary and Allen were OK on their own. Add in Ed King and they became great.
Take away Ed King and they went to mediocre. Add in Steve Gaines and they went stratospheric.

There are not many off stage pictures of the band where there’s not a beer or bottle of booze in the photo.
Interesting note, Petty and Mudcrutch played onstage with Skynyrd at local festival in 1970.
Skynard was not all that.
Allmans and Elvin Bishop, Little Feat blew them away.

Pretty good list except for The Eagles. The Eagles are awful, overrated.
Except for Joe Walsh. He’s pretty cool.
