As a crowded group of Clemson University students and local residents danced and jumped around at an apartment clubhouse late Saturday night, Jeremy Tester felt something strange beneath his feet.
"You could hear the floor about to go through, kind of," he said, "but nobody thought it was going to happen. They just kept going." But suddenly the floor gave way. Dozens of partiers dropped into free fall and landed in a mass of sprawling bodies in the basement. Police said 30 people were injured when the floor of the apartment clubhouse collapsed during a party on homecoming weekend in Clemson, South Carolina.

Sounds like a crowd of NPCs going through their programed motions.
This is also why military troop formations are never, ever marched in stride across bridges. For almost two centuries, troop leaders have been taught that the rhythmic motion of a formation marching in unison can destroy a bridge, and to order their formations to break stride into "route step" with independent footfalls.
I have two rules when I attend a crowded party.
1. No standing on crowded balconies.
2. Avoid crowded floors that aren’t over concrete; especially when people are shoulder to shoulder and jumping up and down.
Nothing may happen, but there is danger; especially on balconies of tall buildings.
I was told years ago that contractors started new incorporations for the purpose of building these apt complexes, then they’d dissolve them to avoid lawsuits. They KNEW the quality of the job.
“...dropped into free fall and landed in a mass of sprawling bodies in the basement.”
How many sexual assault charges will be brought after this?!
Yep, I remember route step over the bridge at the Navy recruit training center, otherwise known as “boot camp” at San Diego in ‘62. Next door to the Marine camp in those days as you no doubt know. They used to tell us that if we thought we had made a mistake joining the Navy we could cross the fence and see how we liked the Marine corps.
Exactly my first thought when I clicked on this thread!
3. Don’t invite too many obese people or let the congregate in one place—spread the food around the room.
As we say in construction, do you want it fast, cheap, or good.
You get any of the two you want.
Guess they decided on fast and cheap.
“...any type of span, roof, floor, bridge etc. if it is hit with rhythmic waves of vibration will develop a sympathetic sway...”
Like the Tacoma Narrows bridge “Galloping Gertie” in 1940.
The movie footage is still amazing.
Outstanding rules of engagement. I get sick to my stomach when I see people doing things that test the limits of structural integrity. Particularly when they are drinking and aren’t thinking about anything substantive.
Also, I've seen very obese people rent horses to ride. I think that is cruel, and there should definitely be a weight limit for this.
Wow, they must have ridden the crane instead of the elevator.
Same two rules I have. I also don’t go to ‘crowded’ parties, anymore, unless I’m close to an exit.
Reminds me of what happened at that Israeli wedding reception when the floor gave way, I think that was back in the 1990s, it was one of the most horrible things I’d ever seen.
That boy ain’t missing any meals, is he?
Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed?
