These restaurants are noisy places and she probably just misunderstood what he said when she asked his name. I’m betting it was an innocent mistake. Lots of people have nicknames about their physical characteristics - Slim, Shorty, Long, Fats. Hearing “Chubby” is natural.

Reminds me of a Cheers episode:
Coach took a call from Melvilles, the restaurant upstairs, and was told to let the Andersons know their table was ready. When two couples, one normal sized and one where both people were severely overweight, came to the bar, Coach said into the phone ‘there are two Anderson couples here’. He waited a few seconds and then said ‘I’m sorry, I was wrong’. Then shouted out ‘TABLE FOR THE BLUBBERBUTTS’. Insensitive, but it was very funny back in the day.
