Mels Diner may be reopening its doors: An Alice reboot is in-the-works at Fox, TVLine has learned.
The network has placed a script order for a modern-day version of the classic CBS workplace sitcom starring Linda Lavin. Diablo Cody (United States of Tara) and Liz Astrof (2 Broke Girls) are penning the script for the multi-cam pilot and will serve as EPs.
The Fox revolves around Long Island housewife Alice Hyatt, who has finally worked up the courage to leave her cheating husband. She drives cross-country to Arizona with her teenage son Tommy, and gets a job as a waitress at a roadside diner where the staff becomes their new surrogate family.
In the original Alice which aired from 1976 to 1985 and was based on the feature film Alice Doesnt Live Here Anymore Lavins titular waitress fleeing New Jersey herself with her son following the death of her husband.
Because Bea Arthur would come back from the dead and kill the studio heads.
Why does Susan Collin’s remind me of Edith, ? “oh I don’t know Ahhchie...”
No Vic Tayback, no Alice, no dice.
But it was a great campaign slogan for Jimmy Carter ...
There can only be one Mel Sharples.
There are so many scripts that could/should be written about the Millenials. Is it that the majority of this young demographic doesn’t have enough self awareness or sense of humor to enjoy any kind of parody? Too bad. That’s a sign of someone taking themselves way too seriously.
I’ll give them one thing, writing was pretty decent back then. And once Bea even consented to have John Wayne do a cameo on the show and ask if her character was Walter’s “little lady”. Pretty good stuff compared to today’s pure PC.
I can’t believe that show ran until 1985 ... wow.
Linda Lavin is still active in Hollywood today, but I hope the lead is given to another actress. Let some new people have a chance to be seen.
Speaking of retreads, wonder how the Murphy Brown retread is going? I heard Hillary made a guest appearance the other week. (Ugg!)
.....because the other reboots like Magnum PI were BRILLIANT ideas!
I think it’s dead Jim.
that was an okay show...the southern blonde made it special.....
I’ve long expected “All in the Meathead Family”
Oh, for Christ’s Sake.
I'd still pay good money to see an unadulterated showing of "Blazing Saddles" on OTA TV today. The outrage it'd stir-up would be worth it!
Let me be the first to say, “fail”.
They can reboot all they want. I never watched this show when it was on the first time, and won’t be watching it if it’s brought back. With all the crap these networks have been airing, I’ve whittled down my TV viewing quite a bit since last season. Gives me more time for Netflix, and British programs.
Next thing you know, “One Day At A Time” will be coming back,
with Valerie Bertinelli in the late Bonnie Franklin’s role as Mom.
