A B.C. filmmaker says he's lucky to be alive after narrowly avoiding a grizzly attack while filming in the Robson Valley, southeast of Prince George. Leon Lorenz, who lives in Dunster, B.C., was filming grizzly bears in a nearby valley last Monday evening when he spotted a bear and her cub. Lorenz said he took cover behind a spruce tree so he could film the bears without disturbing them, but the mother bear picked up his scent.

It’s always best to be in a low to the ground and hidden from sight vantage point when trying to film grizzly bears with cubs./s

“Was the bear using MasterCard or Visa?”

The article reads “the mother bear picked up his scent”

My guess a Discover Card.

Was walking in Yellowstone and someone coming the other way told us there was a grizzly on the trail but all I had to do was clap my hands and it would shoo away. I turned around and made a bee-line back to safety not wanting to test out her advice.

Montana Grizzly Bear Notice:

In light of the rising frequency of human/grizzly bear
conflicts, the Montana Department of Fish and Game
is advising hikers, hunters, and fishermen to take extra
precautions and keep alert for bears while in the field.

We advise that outdoorsmen wear noisy little bells on
their clothing so as not to startle the bears that aren’t
expecting them. We also advise outdoorsmen to carry
pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a
bear.

It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear
activity. Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference
between black bear and grizzly bear poop. Black bear poop
is smaller and contains a lot of berry seeds and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear poop has little bells in it and smells like pepper spray.

Wow. F bear spray - against something like that I want a 30 caliber rifle and a large caliber revolver as a backup sidearm. And I start shooting 250 yards out if she starts charging my way.

If I see a bear, with or without cubs, I am heading the other way. I don’t like any creature bigger and stronger than I am that can eat me. Just as soon shoot it.

Must have been a lot of scat on the ground where it ran out a pant leg.

He wasn’t singing that ‘Grizzly Song’ that the Malibu guy sang. Perhaps that is why they didn’t eat him. I think it is stupid to film a grizzly with her cubs, personally.

Never try to be stealthy and quiet in bear country. The more induced racket the better. You want mamma bear to hear you a mile off. If mamma scents you but never heard you, it’s trouble. She thinks you are stalking her cubs.

At some point during the struggle, Uptain was able to douse the adult sow with bear spray, which has a high probability of thwarting an attack.

“When we were looking at the [adult female bear’s] head,” Hovinga said, “we could smell it, and we could feel it.”

Didn’t work this time - guide was killed.

Agree. The bear was on him when he fired that shot. Those big bear charges happen SO FAST! You typically have about two seconds to respond and you better make sure you respond properly. You don’t get a second chance with these bear charges.

Being covered with elk blood while field dressing the animal probably makes the hunter taste better.

You’re exactly right. And never get between the mamma and her babies.

Me and my brother were on an old logging road and saw some berries to pick. Just as I got out of the pickup I saw two cubs. I told him to “get in, there’s two cubs” The mamma was behind us. We were between her and the babies. She snorted and huffed and went right to them and they disappeared. Another minute or two would have been bad.
