An alarming number of NYC students have scored three or more “zeroes” for their writing answers on the statewide English exams, a new study reveals.

On the English Language Arts exams between 2013 and 2016, in addition to multiple-choice questions, students had to read nine or 10 short stories or texts, then write responses aimed at showing their ability to think critically and cite evidence to support their answers.

There are FR posts that make me glad I’m old and retired. This one more than qualifies. But I feel bad for those coming up that will have to put up with this nonsense for years.

ANOTHER REASON TO HOMESCHOOL

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)

The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.

Educated homeschoolers are going to rise to top positions in any field they enter.

Eventually, they will be the ones making decisions and policies.

The Ten Planks of the Communist Manifesto — Karl Marx, 1848

Number Ten:

10. Free education for all children in government schools. Abolition of children’s factory labor in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production, etc. etc.

comment at site: “People are being taxed to support what we call ‘public’ schools, which train the young to work for the communal debt system. We also call it the Department of Education, the NEA and Outcome Based “Education” .”

I do so hope you're right. Nation's future depends on it. Cannot imagine the person's whose answer is at the beginning of the article being given any sort of decision making power. Shudder.

That does not deal with the real problem. Lower intelligence of the parent{s} is a major reason these kids fail. Those in the lower IQ levels don’t come from the class which can pay for private education. They are the majority of drop-outs, low income and imprisoned.

It is a much more far-reaching problem than just having public schools teaching crap. The culture of at least 30% of the population must change. And you can add the academics to that number.

Public education used to work very well. It prepared me for further study and obtaining two degrees.

My older son attended public schools and was a Nuke on the USS Ohio. He didn’t learn much in the schools and was always a problem to his mother and I because he refused to do the work.

My younger son attended a private school and the first thing he said to me every morning coming up the stairs was “Dad, I hate school.” My response was “Keeg, that is too damn bad.”

Public schools worked quite well until the faculties went Commie.

That is one of the reasons I try and read a lot of British works.

Imagine that Dickens was widely read and appreciated by huge numbers of readers. Today Cliff’s Notes of “Bleak House” would be above the American reader.

It is a tragedy that no one reads anymore, except for a few dinosaurs like me.
